It would never in a million years occur to me that my kids wouldn't know I was just trying to be close to them when I show interest in their life.

It would never in a million years have occured to me the reasons behind such questions and the importance of the information (gained from these questions) to a NT parent.

As an aside, I find I miss the underlying intention behind many social/relationship things so fail to engage in the social protocol properly, understanding the purpose enables me to make sense of the situation, to work with the expectation/protocol better and also give the other person what they need. An example is I got no emotional benefit from things like hugs, so only began to understood why people wanted to hug or touch me when I got an explanation like you parents are giving me now, since then I have relaxed a bit about people wanting to hug/touch me as I can now rationally work out what they are trying to communicate through doing so, and realise their intent is postive.

It's also not just about how you're doing, but about sharing who you are: the things you consider to be important about your day can tell a lot about you as a person. Us parents raised our kids knowing they are different from us, but not knowing exactly how that's going to turn out. These little daily check-ins are a way of finding out more about who our kids are turning out to be.

I think you just pointed out something very important that I had not yet identified - I was raised being expected to be similar to my parents - but I am not similar....Hmm, something to think about.
