Hi, New Here...Please help!
My 15yo DS was diagnosed with PDD-NOS, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Major Depressive Disorder only AFTER he threatened to commit suicide. During admission, the nurse said "have you ever heard of Asperger's?" At the time, the only experience I had was the little kid on the show Parenthood who was obsessed with insects--no way like my son. But, as I read more about it, the more it described him. The hospital ordered a Psychological Assessment that resulted in my son's diagnoses. While I wouldn't prefer for him to be diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, it is SO much easier to explain it to others. When I say "he has Pervasive Development Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified" I get the blank stare and then automatically launch is to an explanation of the diagnosis. When I say "he has Asperger's" I (usually) get some "ah, okays" or slight nods.
They don't write books about PDD-NOS or have websites dedicated to it. So, when I need parenting advice, I usually reach for a book written about Aspie kids or go to websites like this one...
Even if your child isn't diagnosed, there are a lot of great resources for being a parent. Hang in there!
I'm new to this. My daughter is nearly 5 and suspected AS.I am from columbus ohio. I am not sure if you have tried already, but so far I have found the CCBT (center for cognitive and behavioral therapy)to be pretty responsive. My daughter is going to be tested for AS in about two weeks. They have a psych there who specializes in children with AS and another who specializes in (I think) ADHD.
