I think the OP was saying, "I expect my son to mature to the ability to make as much money as I do. Please don't lower his expectations to make only as much as you do."

See, I assume a big reason schools try to lower expectations is largely so they can spend less money on your child and offer less services. Kind of a code for saying, "we don't have the budget for that, and it wouldn't make any difference if we did, so why are you asking?" In which case, your move would backfire: they'd be left wondering why they are expected to go above and beyond for your kid when you could pay for everything privately, and they could use their limited funds on a kid who has no one else to support them. In our district funding is a huge issue, and the schools have to be very careful about which students they will invest in, and try to get the most bang for the buck.

I think the issue is that schools are legally obliged to offer services for kids with special needs - FAPE is a civil right that has nothing to do with a family's means. Therefore, even if a parent can offer to pay privately, the school still can't say "well, you can pay for it yourself, so why should we?"

However, they CAN try to say "services won't make any difference, your child isn't going to get any better" and sometimes do - in which case, CASH's statement communicated exactly what he was trying to say: I am living proof that my child has potential you can't ignore.

My problem is that I'm waivering between thinking that you showed them how much money you make than them, and that you showed them how much less money you make than them. If affects how I read the story. One view being more bitersweet than the other.

I make more then the top of their pay scale. So even if they were at top pay, I was making more.
Yeah, the point would be loss if it was the other way around.

I attended the same school as my son,I Failed every year. 30/40s they said they would never leave me back.
They never even tried to to teach me, because they did not understand geniuses :?:
My VIQ and PIQ is higher than everyone in that room and MY paycheck lower than anyone's, because I do not have a formal education backed by a diploma from this school because they refused to teach me and I lost faith in them.
They refuse to help my son his PIQ is 137, mild social issues and needs just a little help, his V/P iq gap greater than mine. They agreed with his doctors recommendations to the resource room but will not help my son because they do not have a resource room. I left upset but after thinking about it I realized...
They are correct, They can't help him, he needs a Visual oriented teacher not a group of system dependent slackers
He would like to remain in school, I agreed as long as he agrees to sit with me from time to time to learn things that the school teachers could never teach. my situation may differ from others but...

God gave my son a teacher, I guess the Brewster, NY school district finally taught me something...
