This is what I meant by his "way." You have to figure out what works for them - sometimes you try a bunch of different things until one sticks. If you achieve your goal, who cares how you got there?

I feel you on the writing math down. We finally got DS graph paper, because he struggled so with keeping the numbers in order. Another technique is to turn lined paper sideways so it creates columns. However, neither of those interventions help when the problem is that the child thinks he knows more than he does...
