I think aspies can have unusual reactions to meds and maybe starting off very very low and gradually increasing it, is a good way to see if there are bad side effects. I know I have very weird reactions to meds myself and if I am prescribed something like Codeine for a cough, I find half the dose does what it needs to do and I end up very loopy, even then. I wouldn't adjust the doses for other types of drugs, by myself, obviously, but things that are optional and for comfort, I like to be careful.

Your daughter really sounds like she has Borderline Personality Disorder. They usually don't diagnose those who are under 18 with it, but the medical community is starting to change its position on that. The self-injury(cutting), chronic suicidal thoughts, impulsivity, rapidly changing intense moods due to situational stress. I think she would benefit more from DBT than she would CBT if you can find some place that will offer that to adolescents or you can always download free DBT workbooks online to work through with your daughter.

If she learns that she is on an antipsychotic, tell her that antipsychotics are routinely used to treat conditions other than just schizophrenia or bipolar. Seroquel is probably a great idea, it will definitely make her sleep, more likely to be too tired to act out on her impulsive suicidal urges at night after she as taken it. It also could calm her down during the day. If you are really concerned about weight gain, make sure your daughter is never put on Zyprexa(Olanazepine). Seroquel can cause weight gain but nowhere near as bad as Zyprexa, and significantly less than Risperdal(Risperdone).

I'm sorry you experienced that Fnord. My mother is much the same way.

In my case, I could go from very happy to crying very quickly or irritated and impulsive. Much like you'd see in ultraradian bipolar or BPD, except that I didn't turn out to have either after all - I was just struggling to manage my emotions.

I'm glad it helped your daughter sleep. The second dose I took, I fell asleep in the car on the way to school, blearily took myself to the library and then slept through the first two periods! I ended up changing to loading my dose to night time only, rather than twice daily.

I'm intrigued that he's only prescribing 25mg though - I take 100mg a day and that's generally accepted to be a very low dose.
25mg is the lowest dosage size pill and is reasonable to start an adolescent who has no prior tolerance to the drug whatsoever. 100mg is considered to be a very low dose for the treatment of schizophrenia, actually a sub therapeutic dose, but it is not considered a very low dose when used as a mood stabilizer or for sleep.

It sounds like you really care about your daughter and you're willing to do anything to help her. Keep up the good work.

That's interesting to know - I've only seen the official doses for bipolar and schizophrenia. I know that it's the lowest pill, but I thought it was mainly for doses in the first few days. I was 17 when I started taking it but I had been taking Risperidone prior, so that makes sense. I guess they aren't placeboing me after all!

And, yes, it does sound like BPD. It's unusual to diagnose for it until 18 but they definitely treat for preemptive signs.
