My son doesn't take any meds. He has long periods of improvement followed by periods of regression. I've gotten used to it.

Cutting out blue food dye got rid of the worst of his hyperactivity. Daily multivitamin help with behavior and concentration. Probiotic is the best thing I've done for his digestion. His GI problems have gotten so much better since I added the probiotic and he's eating more food (he's a picky, skinny guy).

Hi Tortuga,

I'm not sure that I'm qualified to say anything about Ablify as we haven't used it.

I did read a few articles but it doesn't sound like an ADD/ADHD drug. It doesn't sound like it's any good with most Aspie symptoms either. If anything, it looks like it's for BiPolar disorder.

I'd recommend that you keep a close watch on it and make sure that you question why it is being prescribed. I have a feeling that you may not have been told everything.

There's quite an interesting bit of conversation here...

Be very clear on why Abilify is being prescribed. As noted above, its primary use is to treat bipolar disorder. My wife is subject to (among other things) Major Depressive Disorder, and one of her psychs had prescribed this. After a couple of months, she stopped taking it - in her words, it made her "a zombie". It took away the lows - and any possibility of a high, as well. (She's doing well now on Paxil for depression, and Xanax for anxiety.)

For that matter, always be clear on why any medication is prescribed, then read up on it and see if it's effective for that. I could have saved her a lot of trouble if I'd done that sooner...

I don't think you can get medications specifically for Asperger's or related conditions. Any medications would be to treat co-morbids such as depression, anxiety conditions, OCD, Bipolar disorder and so on.

Thanks 'Ster. :) I don't know if I am typical of Aspies but I find the comorbids far worse than the actual Asperger's, especially the anxiety and depression.

Not sure about the anxiety.... I don't seem to have that - or at least I haven't identified it yet.

The depression is a downer though - it seems to just come completely out of nowhere. I don't need a sad thing to bring it on... sometimes I just am... even when I should be happy.

I don't take anything for it though. I've only taken anti-depressants once in my life. I believe I should be able to beat it without assistance. Sometimes it's a fine line though.

The medication my son has been put on is for anxity, deression, etc. I can tell a big difference when he's not on anything. It's just difficult to find the right one that doesn't make him feel bad.
I want him to still be himself!! ! He does have to have something for anxity because the whole day at school is full of stressful things for...even going to the restroom.
