I don't have enough good to say about the PECS system, which uses pictograms to encourage communication. It certainly expanded my caughter's vocabulary rapidly! She was mostly nonverbal until four, about two years ago; now she uses sentences (with her own unique structure, but sentences nonetheless!) and has recently taken to indicating choices by having the conversation out loud (as in, "Juice? No, not juice. Chocolate milk? Yes, chocolate milk! Please.").

If you do use pictograms, be sure to point out exactly the picture used, and say the word slowly every time. Encourage your son to use the pics to spell out what he wants; when he does so, repeat the request aloud before fulfilling it, as this will help him associate the word with the thing. After a time, you'll be amazed at what he can do with words! :)
