Do I tell my child he has AS?
My son insisted on knowing. So, I told him in terms of his strengths and weaknesses. We read All Cats Have Aspergers, and he laughed, made connections, and then we moved on. Before this, he caught me reading books about Aspergers and it's as if he just knew. He needed something, some reason why he felt different, I'm sure. I was completely honest. We don't dwell on it now. I don't call him "my little aspie" or any such thing. Yet, he and I both have this awareness and it's good.
Beware if you decide to become open about it with team members. I explained to one psych how I told my son and we are very open about his Autism Spectrum Disorder/Aspergers, and he said "I would make sure he knows that he's much more than this." I agreed. Then, after, I thought, but this is who my son is.
Beware. This pscyhiatrist, very renown, represents the perception that still exists about autism and PDD's in general.
Tell him all about his neat strengths and some of the areas he is strong in because of his "dash of autism" and focus on the positives.

TELL HIM!! OMFG I wish I had known what was wrong with me instead of thinking I was a freak and no one else was like me. Once I knew, I had peace and self-acceptance, answers and relief. TELL HIM. Not telling him implies that it's some icky thing that should be hidden. We talk very openly about autism in our home, and our kids are only 4 and 2.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. I have an aspie acquaintance and he is still very bitter that his mum and dad didn't tell him 10 years ago he had Asperger's. They told him he had AD\HD (diagnosed at the same time) but not the Aspergers and so he struggled for years with being socially inept.
I think kids should be told about autism and shouldn't be made to feel they are freaks because they have this condition.
