Well, for what you'd be paying for a residential placement, you could easily pay an all-day attendant to come to the residence. It's a thought.

Residential placement will be waaay more expensive than an in home aide. He wont get intensive therapy or much socialization at home though. The school district will have to foot some of the bill for residential placement. If we home school they are released from any responsibility.

Is there a possibility your son could get involved with law enforcement in a positive way? (This depends a lot on your local police and how they view people with disabilities.) There is a program - not usually for kids with behavioral issues, so YMMV - called the Explorers, it's an offshoot of scouting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_Enforcement_Exploring

The reason I suggest this is that if he's a black-and-white thinker, he might benefit from learning about the law and how it works outside of the times when it applies to him - maybe if law enforcement doesn't work, you might find a lawyer who would be willing to let him learn?

When my son was smaller, he was fascinated by Batman and we found the following book - http://www.amazon.com/Batmans-Guide-Cri ... 0789497557 It's probably a little young for your son, especially if he is 2E, but I bet there are books like it for kids at different ages (maybe not with superheroes attached.) I do still recommend the book I mentioned earlier; the language is simplistic but it does frame things very well for a rules-bound, black-and-white thinker.

I hope all goes well for you, and do keep us posted on what decisions you've made and how things are working out.
