Over protective parents of people with aspergers
I would absolutely agree with that.
I'm glad my parents didn't over protect me because they were worried I would get teased and abused by other kids because I couldn't talk and then didn't talk well. Instead they put me in school and be with normal kids instead of segregating me. But yet they put me in a self contained room because they were naive and assumed the school knew what they were doing, they didn't know they had rights for me. Plus back then they put all kids with disabilities in one classroom. Apparently they still do that. I thought we had inclusion now where kids with disabilities are allowed to attend normal classes and be in normal classrooms.I was also allowed to attend birthday parties I was invited to and my mom didn't keep me from anyone's house when she would drop her kids off to be watched. Just something my neighborhood did where parents watch each others kids, like a play date thing so that way kids learn social skills and learn to play with others.
I am sure parents who shelter their special needs children do it to protect them but IMO they are doing them more harm than good. Unless the kid is profoundly disabled or would never live a normal life and be independent, then that might be different. But for someone like me it wouldn't have been good. It would feel like I wasn't allowed to live a normal childhood and have normal things other kids can have such as having friends or going to other kids houses or birthday parties or being allowed to do things like learning to use a knife or shave or not cook eggs or even allowed to walk outside by myself or even ride a bike alone. To me that would seem abusive and my mom's excuse would have been how I couldn't talk so she was just protecting me and keeping me safe and she always knew I had something wrong with me so she was trying to protect me. I am not sure what I would have been like today if my mom did that.
