I agree - having all communications in writing (or with a written record) will mean they can't pretend they didn't say a particular thing or twist it around to make themselves look better. I suppose it wouldn't be possible to take a little recording device strapped to one's body (and therefore invisible) during meetings with the school authorities?

If it were me and I were not in the outside workforce, I would homeschool. The school authorities are unlikely to change and in the meantime, this child is getting more and more traumatised. I also don't understand why he is getting his computer privileges cut. He probably has no idea why he is being punished for something that happened ages ago.

Social skill are always something that can be worked on once the crisis is past. Homeschooled kids can still socialise with other children eg. getting together with other parents with kids of a similar age.

Kids have only one childhood and the school authorities shouldn't be allowed to make this or similar children's lives a misery through their ignorance and obstinacy.

you could get into big trouble tape recording someone without their knowledge......if it's a conversation you're wanting to capture the details of, you could always take out a notebook and start taking notes~tell them that your hubby couldn't make it, and you wanted to be sure to not forget every last detail...then have them sign the note.....

Pop is the only one who hit, so I'm not sure what you mean by "other kid". No adult witnessed the event and it apparently was over a misunderstanding.
As far as the IEP goes, they claim that they don't have 1-1 aides and they actually took it out of his IEP. We don't want a 1-1 anyways. We just want the IEP goals met in a methodical way and administered by someone who knows what they're doing. We were getting stalled and "we didn't know and now we do" excuses.

Your IEPs work differently than ours. No one can change anything in our IEP without our consent. If they agreed to an Aide in the IEP, but don't have the staffing, they need to hire an independent contractor to provide the service. If not, they are totally out of compliance. But, if you don't want one on a dialy basis, request that one be with him on field trips. That would help him and the teacher as well.

Ah, okay - I guess a transcript would do. Given that this is a crisis situation, temporising and hoping the school authorities will change seems futile. If there are no other decent schools in the district, I'd say this is a prime case for home schooling. As I said, kids only have one crack at childhood.

I know of plenty of grown ups who've said "why didn't my parents take me out of the school where I was getting picked on?" It didn't seem to be much "the done thing" when I was a child and I myself was abused by a couple of teachers. My parents just hoped that the situation would resolve with time, and when they went to the school, they were told they should take me to a child guidance officer. Again, in those days, it wasn't really the done thing.

I don't think taping or transcribing would really solve the issues. The problems arise when someone "misunderstands" what was said. No one really denies what is said, just their responsibility to it. Or the "tag team" effect when I have a conversation with one teacher and the principal hears about it later, then we must have a meeting in front of another district rep.

I never wanted to be homeschooled, I love the school environment, though I wish someone had transferred me out of the district I was in a lot earlier. I thrive on big schools and variety in classes. My husband had the opposite experience. He did "better" (not great) in a private, parochial school. If there had been someone at home for him, he would have preferred homeschooling.
We can't tell at this point if Pop is enjoying school. I don't know if he even knows.

i think if you are transcribing what they've said to you, you can ask for clarification....."now, let me make sure I've got this right. you said...."........................of course, the tag team thing will get in the way. all around, it's difficult being in a situation where you don't feel like you're getting anywhere

If they modified your IEP without consent,
then it is time to bring in the force of law.

They are out of compliance,
they are legally required to fix it.

Call them on it with a registered letter to the schools superintendent, and the schools lawyer.

Or even threaten to go and see your local elected representative. You pay taxes like everybody else and it looks as if you are not getting full value for your taxes.
