We have a swingset in our backyard. This morning I heard laughing and saying "mom, mom" in the backyard. I went out to look and he was going high on the swing. He said, "Look how high I can go." I thought for sure his dad pushed him. Apparently he did it on his own. He was laughing and having so much fun. He used to hate to swing.
My brother and his family, including Nate's cousin his same age, are visiting from another state. A few hours later, he learned how to swing as well. It's so great when kids learn how to do something on their own. The joy they get from those accomplishments are so wonderful.

This afternoon we went to a park that also has a large water fountain. Nate and his cousin got completely wet. His cousin definitely got more wet but Nate actually went close to the water and soaked his shirt. That is HUGE for him. He used to hate water, except for luke warm baths. Even slight water sprinkles would seem to hurt him. He was laughing the whole time. He then climbed on the play equipment and was running around. He used to hate to climb. It used to completely scare him.

It's so wonderful to see how Nate is growing!

When they woke up this morning, his cousin wanted to watch Nascar and a little bit of baseball. Nate was completely bored. Later Nate chose to watch Colossal Construction. He was intensely watching it while his cousin said, "This is boring" and went outside. I love how kids are so different.

My 22 month old, on the other hand, is just so active. He went up and down our slide for two hours today - over and over again. He ran around the park for another hour; he just couldn't stop. I am so tired and he is sleeping.

Boring post, I know, but I just wanted to share.

I agree with you. It is the little things. I think that more parents of spectrum children should look at the little things, instead of supporting Autism Speaks.

Yeah, I still remember trying to swing as high as I dared. I NEVER wanted to go so far that the swing might get slack, or go over the bar. Or slides... But YEAH, it is interesting how kids can get SO much pleasure from such SIMPLE things. Like the 5 times I heard a kid squeal that he or she could read a book!(in restaurants and bookstores).

Amen, It's the small steps forward that make things better. It's nice to see someone taking joy in their child. :D The small thing turn slowly in to big things. We should be proud of our kids and all that they acomplish weather they look huge to others isn't the point we know and they know that it's a big deal.

I love watching them grow one "small" accomplishment at a time!

Oh yes! It's the little things. The things that wouldn't actually count as milestones for other kids but can shoot a parent over the moon. :D

You're not kidding! Last week my 4 yo actually attempted swimming for the first time, by his own desire. This is so huge. He also has some major water issues (still wears goggles in the bathtub just in case a drop of water should get too close to his eyes). I must have looked like a crazy person cheering him on. I was downright giddy. A newly opened door is always worth celebrating!
