Hello all!

Well, the good news is that I have finally finished my book to my satisfaction, and I am making it available for public release.

If you want to just skip to the good part, then go visit my website at:
http://www.ASDstuff.com (I think it is catchy)
You can download the book from there.

The book is basically Autism 101.
It covers topics like:
What is autism
What causes it
What to do about it
How does an autistic person think
What causes the problems
How to deal with the problems
What to do about socializing
what to do about stimming
what treatment programs and medications are there and which ones should you get
should you tell your child that they are autistic
what long term plans should you have
and so forth.

It doesn't cover absolutely everything that every parent needs to know, but it tries to handle the most common questions that parents ask themselves. It also helps to explain what is really important and worth focusing on, and it has been getting good reviews from the people who helped review the rough drafts.

About a month ago I released a rough draft and I got some reviews from people which were fairly helpful. So I would like to give a big thank you to those who sent me back comments. I tried to edit and update the book as needed to fill in some problems, and overall, I think it is better now. I expanded a couple chapters, and added 20 pages. I also fixed a lot of grammar mistakes, and rewrote certain paragraphs to make them more understandable. The message of the book hasn't changed much, I have just gone back through and tried to explain it better.

Interesting. How long have you been working on this? And is it just for parents or can adults benefit as well?

Ive been working on it for 7 months. It is meant mainly for parents who are fairly new to the diagnosis, and looking for some more info. Like I said, it is a primer to what parents need to know about dealing with autistic children.

There is certainly nothing preventing autistic adults from reading it, but I am not sure how much information you will gain. If you are curious, you can always download and see if you like it.

Congratulations! I'm really excited you've finished it, and really sorry I got so swamped that I couldn't be a part of the review process like I had planned to be :(

You do realize that something you are giving away isn't "for Sale"? ;)

I can't wait to read it.

Do remember to add a link in our "recommended reading" section, as well. It is definitely recommended!! !!

Thank you so much! I just downloaded the book. I love the title, "Congratulations! Your Child Is Strange". :)

Thank you for making that available for download. Your posts have always been very helpful in explaining my daughter to me but of course once the thread sinks, it's annoying to dig through the archives. Now all of your advice is in one convenient place- my hard drive! Thank you.

I hope you are getting a book agent. There is definately a market for this. Although there are many books about autism available, all the ones written by autistic adults seem to be memoirs with only a couple of pages oif advice. I have devoured these memoirs (Temple Grandin, Daniel Tammet, John Robinson and some others) to get what advice I can out of them. Yours is the first that I've seen that is pure advice from an autistic adult. There has got to be a market for that. I can't be the only parent who read Temple Grandin's bio hoping that it would just tell me what to do to help meltdowns.

So thank you. And hopefully you will be able to get this out there to as many parents as possible.

Its a 100% off sale. It also comes with free shipping for the first 100 people to download it.

Anyways, I have added my book to the recommended reading list, and I was curious if you have any plans to update the original post. As it is, everybody has just posted their recommended books. It might be a good idea to edit the Original post, and list the books according to category. Categories like general info books, personal memoirs from autistic people, fiction books, education books, etc.

Not having read most of them, I don't think I could do that, but it is a great idea, and if someone sorts it all out that way, I would be happy to change the first post to included that list.

If you real;ly want to get it into a lot of parental hands, maybe you could give it its own Facebook page.

I think I'd do that when charges get attached.

Seriously, Tracker, I understand your goals and why you are willing to give it away, but once you've got a little traction going you should slowly start charging. Maybe $3 a download and slowly going up from there. It's not like you're made of money, and you deserve to get something back.

And maybe see if you can get it professionally published.

If it's going to stay a PDF file, maybe you could split it into two parts. One part of it would be free-like the pages Amazon lets you read for free- and the other part would require a small fee.

I wish I were an agent or in any way affiliated with that field because I think there is publsihing potential. There are lots of books of advice for parents of kids on the spectrum but they seem to be written either by medical professionals or parents giving BTDT advice. I think yours is in an untapped niche of the adult with insider info.

I like DW-A-Mom's idea of giving it away for free for awhile to get traction and then charging once word gets around. Or maybe charge for part/free for part.

I also think you should link your website- once it's complete and has this PDF- into Autism-hub.com

The posters here who have blogs might also be willing to link to your website. I'm going out on a limb here, but I think it would be worth asking anbuend and Callista if you could be linked in their blogs. Anbuend especially has a very large blog following as ballastexistenz and you could get some exposure that way.

I have read about half of your book so far and I think it is brilliant. It is also incredibly helpful. I really hope you go ahead and find a publisher because this could really benefit a lot of people to help "decode" their children. Thats what I feel, my daughter has always been such a mystery to me and now it's like I've found the manual.

I think you can add at least a donation button from Paypal to get something for your hard work. I'm sure there are people around who want to support it.

I've added a link to your site at:
http://www.pecsforall.com/pictoselector/index_en.html

It is almost at the bottom of the page.

Me, too! Thanks - and I agree - or at the least start a blog with advertisements and put up a few pages every day. While I understand the need to serve the AS community, you don't need to undervalue your work; I will gladly send something via PayPal.

Ok well, the web page is all nice and working now. I don't know how many of you have gotten a chance to read it or browse the web page, but I was hoping for some feedback.

Do you think the web page needs anything more? Perhaps an 'about the author' page? And if so, what information about me would you like to know? What other pages would you like, is there any features you think would help, etc..

Also, for those of you who have read the book, is there any topics that my book missed which you would like to see added in future revisions, or FAQs? I am trying to figure out what I should write about next.
