I was diagnosed as having ADD or Aspergers as of now the symptoms are minimal. When I was 11 my mother and I discovered a fire and asked me to pull the fire alarm when we were outside.

I was wondering how was it that my mom allowed me to activate the fire alarm and she helped me with reading the directions on the fire alarm. I remember there was glass so I kicked it as there was no hammer and I did not want to get cut.

If this was your son with Aspergers would you let him pull the alarm if you were together? How was it that my mom had me pull it? Do you think my disability helped in this situation since the alarm went off? Would it take someone longer to activate the alarm with Autism how would you know if your son could do it in a timely manner?

Thanks

Your mother obviously knew that you were capable to do something like this otherwise she would not have asked you to do this. Having AS or ADD does not stop you from functioning in a day to day life, i am only new to all this and have recently had my daughter diagnosed with AS. My daughter does have trouble with processing some things but i know she would be able to cope with something like that. Everyone with AS is different, my girl is high functioning but if i were to ask her to pull the fire alarm and then to do another couple of things after that then she would have problems, some people with AS are not so high functioning. Maybe you need to talk with your mother and find out exactly what your diagnosis was, you may only have mild Asperger's with only a few traits, good luck

She may have simply been trying to teach you what to do if ever you were caught alone in a same situation. I myself am in many ways a kinetic learner (which means I learn things by actually doing them). Maybe your mom thought you were too.

I've never had to pull a fire alarm but I've been told to get help when there was a lot of smoke around. Frankly, the only reason I was asked is because the other people where we were at were all old or physically disabled.

I'm a bit directionally-impaired and slow. I got yelled at for not processing it quick enough or being able to find the person I was supposed to get help from. Unfortunately in situations like that people don't think to give clear-cut directions or even that the person they are giving them to needs them because there are bigger problems. I don't speak much either, so it was difficult altering the person in the first place.

It's probably a good thing I've never been in an actual fire situation, I'd probably get everyone killed if things were relied on me. People seem to act on instinct in situations like that but I must not have any.

Your mother asking you to pull the fire alarm was to see if you could do it, or to teach/show you how.

Thanks for the responses. I remember the alarm had glass so I kicked the glass as I could not find a hammer. When I pulled the handle for some reason my hand slipped so I pulled it again. Why do you think I let my hand go before the handle stopped? My mom said pull it again all the way until you hear the alarm.

Maybe your palms were sweaty. Maybe it had accumulated water. Maybe you were clumsy. Maybe it was because you were a child who had never pulled the alarm before. Maybe it's because pulling the alarm has certain consequences unless it's really serious and needed.

I think you're seriously over-analyzing this (and now it appears I am.)
