The Laundry Detergent Isle

I'm curious, do any of your children have a massive issue with this isle at the supermarket?

When I was younger, I couldn't go down it without my eyes stinging and watering like crazy. It was worse than being in a room with someone chopping onions.

Strangely enough, today I can barely smell the laundry detergent in it.

When I was a kid it was the coffee aisle. Love the stuff now.

I worked in a supermarkets for eight years, the smell of the Laundry Detergents next to the scent blocks... :eew: :eew: :eew:

My aisle was that of coffee and cookies. Sniffing the coffee beans *snifffff* ahhh!

I can't speak to your original question because I so rarely make a trip to the grocery store with my kids in tow now that they are in school, but this post reminded me of my son (now 7,) way back when I was just starting to question whether there might be something different about him than other kids. I once was running errands with him (he was a baby, not even walking yet) and decided to stop in a scented candle store. The minute we got in the door he started screaming. I took him out right away and he was immediately calm again--this is going to sound mean, but I just had to know if the overwhelming smells had caused the problem--I wheeled him back in and sure enough, same response. Now he loves to smell those things. I guess his sensory system has just evened out over time, and maybe yours has too?

I love the smell of the aisle. I don't remember smelling it before, I think it's my pregnancy that did it. I can see why it be overwhelming for someone on the spectrum.

*raises hand* I have problems with it myself and both sons do too. It is awful! I hold my breath, grab what I need (the unscented detergent for sensitive skin) and RUN. I don't take the boys to the grocery store unless I absolutely have to, and we get the heck away from the detergents/cleaners/air fresheners as quickly as we can.
