Apparently I skipped words and went straight to sentences. Good luck teaching her.
My son sort of did this. He went from not being able to say mama, to speaking in 5-word sentences, almost overnight. He's having a bit of trouble with reading now (kindergarten), but I think the reason is similar to his speech delay. He doesn't like saying things the wrong way and wants to know them perfectly before he says them. When he reads words phonetically, he often becomes very upset because it doesn't sound exactly as the word should in his mind. He does so much better when he has a word memorized, which he does very well.
I think learning phonetics is important in a conceptual way, but for practicing, I think it can be better to go with what's comfortable and natural. I don't think abandoning something that is working is a very good idea, but that's just my own, unprofessional opinion.
