I thought I'd like to start a really positive thread about things that our children have done, that are a bit out of the ordinary, but make us proud for having such amazing children. Our daughter's teachers have just suggested our 5yr old daughter should be assessed after Easter break. It's likely that she has Aspergers.

She attends a singing workshop at Scottish Opera. On Saturday, a photographer and reporter from a national newspaper came to speak with us parents and kids, with the intention of publishing an article, next Saturday. There was a double bass case on the floor and the kids were asked to go into it and sit. There was only enough room for half of the kids, so some came out, along with mine. The photographer said he'd take that photo twice, once with each group of kids. Anyway, our girl went behind the case. We couldn't get to her and wondered what she was up to. Just as the photographer shouted 'Smile', she jumped up, arms in the air, smiling. The class teacher said to me, whilst laughing, 'She's thinking outside the box'.

I'd love to hear similar stories. Knowing what we're dealing with on a day to basis, it helps if we can focus on the fun side for a while.

My AS son is working at my daughter's daycare as a volunteer. Not a natural fit for an AS child but the director knows him from his younger days and together it seems they are making it work. Really cool to watch our kids grow, rise above, mature, and take on challenges. My son is being very responsible about it. I'm impressed.

The best thing about Aspies is that they definitely think outside the square and they are totally unique! Personally, I love the quirky uniqueness of people. Who wants to be "normal" and as my Aspie son points out to people who tell him he is not normal "what is normal and what makes you think you are normal" :-) That usually puts them in their place!! Seriously, people can be so rude!! !

My 22 yr old son is the family & friend life coach guru!! He knows when someone (either family or friend) is not well mentally and spiritually and without anyone else realising what he is doing he quietly becomes that person's shadow and he picks them up and gets them back on track (sometimes it can take 6 months or so) and then he just as quietly moves back in with me and my partner when that other person no longer needs him. We call him Mr Fix it!!

Its just a shame that he cant do that to help strangers.

We are the ones that are blessed having these Aspie kids in our lives.
