My son is having major problems sensory things. He is constantly picking at scabs and complaining of his feet itching. I am really looking for ideas on how to help him through this...... It is driving me crazy on top of the fact that his scrapes are never healing. Please help!

Have you tried an oatmeal bath? And/or some of that spray which dulls the senses. I think its called anesthetic cream or something like that..

Oatmeal bath sounds like a good idea. Will he leave bandaids on the scrapes? Is there any chance the itching feet are due to athlete's foot? If it is and the over the counter remedies are not working talk to your doc. They can prescribe a more potent anti-fungal than you can get OTC.

This may be totally off the wall but my husband experienced very painful neuropathy where his feet felt like pins and needles all the time for about 6 months. The doc gave him a drug for it but I can't remember what it was called. Probably not related to your son's situation at all but made me think of it.

I can't see anything on his foot that leads me to believe athletes foot. I may have to try the oatmeal bath

Does he have other ways to stim? I've picked my scabs as a stim for years. Providing alternatives may help, although in my experience it's hard to find something that provides a similar sensation. As for the itching, that may be a skin problem that needs to be examined by a dermatologist.

This may or may not be related but my daughter has extreme itchiness when she consumes red dye. I know it sounds crazy but maybe try to eliminate artifical colors from his diet and see if it is food related? Seriously, she used to writhe and scream that her whole body would itch all over.

Also, is it possible he has eczema? Sometimes it can be not so bad visually but creates itchiness (the skin might appear rough or bumpy). The doc can prescribe a topical cream if it is eczema.

I want to thank you all for your help and advice. Today has just been one of those days I am overwhelmed. He has a really bad day.... with all of this plus just temper tantrums. I love him very much and I just need to step back. My heart just breaks to watch him have these days and know that my patience is so little at times. Thanks again and sorry just needed to vent somewhere!

My daughter used to itch terribly too. We had some sort of medicated bath oil which forms a tiny layer on the skin when you get out to keep it moist and un-itchy. It seemed to work. We also had to change our laundry detergents/softners for sensitive skin ones.

He should see a dermatologist and an allergist just to make sure he doesn't have an actual physical condition causing him to itch. If only his feet itch, he could have a fungal infection. Children who don't wear socks are particularly prone to these.

If he is just picking scabs that are already there, you might just try covering them with band-aids. If he's making the scabs, and he's physically fine, he probably has a condition related to hair pulling.
