I am a tour guide at Highgate Cemetery London and have loved the place all my life.

I am curious to know if there are others here that share my interest in Cemeteries?

The one place I wanted to go much to my friends dismay, when we went to New Orleans was the cemeteries. I love the old cemeteries with the big tombs. They have a lot here in France so I like to walk through them as well (when I could walk that is). My Grandfather was the preacher of a church when I was little and I spent a lot of time out in the cemetery. I liked to put a piece of paper over the names and color over with a pencil so you get the image....sometimes I would do it over other parts of the headstones and I would see pictures in them. There were some very old ones there from the early 1900's but, of course, nothing like you can find here in France. Not long ago before I left the US I went to visit my parents who live close to Tombstone Arizona and it was fun to go to the cemetery there....some of the wording on the tombstones are humorous.
I think when I was a child it was my way of dealing with death which used to really frighten me due to my religious upbringing. Now I just like it because I think its cool....even though I want to be cremated  !

I'm a busy single mom to 4, so don't have time for such things in a long time. When I was younger though, I did feel drawn to the peace and tranquility of cemetaries, and visited them from time to time. Once at age of 18, driving the streets w. other misfits in the middle of the night after drinking bottomless cups of coffee at an all night diner, I took my friends to the cemetary to show them it was a cool place to be. I didn't realize cemetaries were "private property" that closed at a certian time each night! The cops came and not only drove us out but searched my old beat up car and kept us standing around as they ran our IDs!

Didn't go in the middle of the night again after that!~ Had children fairly young and all was redirected to them. My way of honoring the peace of cemetaries has been to teach my children about it as we'd drive by, telling them it is not a scary, spooky place. It is a place of memories and rememering loved ones in our heart and a place of love and respect. I still find it fascinating, that was triggered as a very young child visiting graves and putting flowers each Memorial Day w my Mom and Grandma. Yet as for me, I find ground burials disturbing and will dontate any useful parts and be cremated. I spent a long time contemplating things like this at a young age. I used to think I could deal with a vault, yet as I grew older and more practical, I abandoned this.

I think my Grandma thought it a bit creepy how fascinated I was with these visits as a young child. My mother, ever my interpreter, explained to her I was just a very sensitive child, unusual but smart and advanced. She acepted my oddities and we never knew of AS in my upbringing. I have never met anyone else with this particular fascination/ appreciation for cemetaries, I kind of forgot about it until this thread. I keep "getting it" over and over on this board. Seeing myself and my past through new lenses of undertstanding my brain wiring. Thanks for the post.

I like cemeteries especially the really old ones. I like walking around and looking at the tombstones, the names and dates on them.

Same here.
I like walking around old cemeteries like Keira. Reading the names and especially the dates on the tombstones.
A few years ago I bought and read the book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" just by its cover, which is a statue of a girl in Savannah's Cemetery in Georgia, US. Fantastic book by the way.

My 4 year old calls them 'Zombie Gardens"... We took a road trip from Virginia to Vermont this Spring & her only memory of New York is 'the big zombie garden' that we drove by/through. It was MASSIVE.

My daughter is 5 and seems to like cemeteries. We took her into the Glasgow Necropolis (a really old famous cemetery here) and explained what it was all about. She loved the place. When we got to the viewpoint at the top, she gave a rendition of, 'If you're happy and you know it'. She also loves going to old ruins, like when we were in holiday in Ireland, many of which had cemeteries.
