School is still so problematic for my son age 13yrs dx ADHD, AS, OCD, the school have made many concession's but still not on his resource hours which I feel my son still needs breaks from class he is in 2nd year of post primary. I feel the full day of normal school is too stressful for him. Again tonight school refusal we have this 3-4 times a week.

My son wants to move schools because his friends from his primary school are there, whilst I understand this I am not sure if its just moving the problems and once he starts I feel he will find it more difficult. He is very private and does not want his friends to know about his dx this will be very difficult if he goes to the same school as them. In primary school he masked all his difficulties and only the family knew how stressful school was but we didn't know at that time about AS or OCD. He has made friends at this school and friends have never been a issue other than my son feeling insecure about if they are really his friends. He chooses to hang with his friends on his own terms.

The school he attends now is a small mixed secondary, the one he wants to move to is a very large all boys school. He has huge sensory issues that cause him anxiety. He is on medication for ADHD straterra he is talking the max dosage. He just recently started on prozac for anxiety 20mg it has helped with his OCD but he still gets very anxious.

Because he still hasn't settled in this school and is very unhappy I don't know what to do. I am thinking that he maybe feels the grass is green on the other side. My head tells me it will be too daunting for him but my heart just can't take his unhappiness and I want to do the best for him. I am also worried if he moves and it fails where do we go from there, he doesn't want to be home schooled. His differences are now more noticeable than when he was at primary school and he is also receiving notes for misbehaving in class which was never an issue. I am worried this behaviour might become more serious and maybe I need to act before he is seen as a trouble maker and consequences become more serious and then I might have difficulties in finding another school.

He is an accomplished athlete and his grades are still good but he could achieve much better I am worried everything might go down hill, also I really don't know if moving the problem will help or should we wait and hope that he will settle down and keep working with the school for changes that will help him. He received his dx for AS initially private but to get the school fully on board you need a dx from the local Autism Services he had his assessment and they confirmed ASD this should helped with his resources hours but they are still slow as they are under pressure.

His constant upset and unhappiness is making things at home very stressful should I hold out and wait till the local services are fully on board or because its taken the school so long to understand his needs does he now just really hate it and no matter what changes are made its not going make a difference.

I think I would start by finding out what services for him would be like at the other school. Spend time there, talk to staff.

I understand all your concerns. Best way to answer them is to get more information.

If you start to believe it is viable, your son will have to go into it eyes wide open, lots of discussions you two will need to have, and I would ask him to make some promises.

Sometimes the best thing for our kids is counter-intuitive; every child really is different; hopefully you can figure it out.
