Hi all,
My 9yr old son has mild Aspergers, it's all but been officially diagnosed but now my mission is to understand him and help him to be the balanced, happy boy that I know he wants to be.
I could really do with some tips and hints on how to put strategies in place and what steps (however small) me and my partner can put in place.

Also, my partner is struggling to understand my sons side of this and I would love someone to give me an insight into how I can 'open up his eyes' to my sons point-of-view and better his understanding.

I look forward, in anticipation, to your feedback.

Carra :O)

Go get the book The Complete Guide to Aspergers by Tony Attwood. Both of you read it. That's my best advice.

You can use the search at the top of the page for prior posts on this subject as well. Welcome to WP.

AS kids are all different. Yes, read as much as you can but also have your partner spend time with your son. That's really how one would pick up on any child's point of view. Reading up on AS will help but not if it just builds up a stereotype in one's mind.

We've got a thread full of reading recommendations up at the top.

I know we've talked about the partner issue before ... Getting well informed yourself, and getting some books in the house he might find himself browsing are, good places to start.

Welcome and don't hesitate to ask as you come up with more specific questions.

We should put together a "new diagnosis" sticky for parents to go to at first...there's some great advice here!

I've thought the same thing.

Some 5000 posts ago I think I had some great "how to start" mini book posts, but there were only so many times I could write it ... And I foolishly didn't save or bookmark a thing. If someone wanted to gather some of the good stuff into their blog (everyone gets them with their WP account, although formatting is not natural) that would be a goof place to start.
