need help with son-unsure of diagnosis now
I have a 24 year old stepson that was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 17. He just had a speech and language assessment a month ago and we just now got the results-
the age-equivilent is compared at 21.11 years
recalling sentences-77 age-equivilent-13.9
formulating sentences-34 age-equivilent-8.3
word classes-receptive-15 age-equivilent-12.6
word classes-expressive-7 age-equivilent-9.6
word classes-total-22 age-equivilent-10.10
word definitions-30 age-equivilent->21.11
His supra-linguistic and nonverbal language skills are poor-less than 4%.
There are other things too but too long to type it all out. It's 10 pages long.
I thought to have a diagnosis of Asperger's there had to be no language delay/language issues? He talked on time.
If my stepson would get a rediagnosis of for ex. HFA, since that's not in the DSM-IV would that disqualify him for future regional center services-eve though they aren't doing anything for him?
He got in with regional center back in March 2012 based on the Asperger's diagnosis(after we appealed) but they won't do anything for him. His case manager said he would never ever get off the waiting list for funding services. Apparently there are more needy people but I know not even half of the 2,800 people on the list can't be under the "homeless or threatens themself or others" to get immediate funding."
He did have medicaid but because he is over 21 they won't cover speech and language, and OT and social skills for him. They just denied him because he isn't on SSI yet but they approved him this time 1 year ago and he was still waiting on a hearing for SSI and wasn't back on i then yet, just like now. We appealed that denial too. My husband refuses to put him back on our insurance; he thinks there is nothing wrong with his son-it would only cover 60 hours a year total of OT and speech& language. It wouldn't cover social skills.
He doss stay in his own apartment. The shelter he as in for a year is paying his rent and utilities until he gets on SSI. His apartment is cheap-all electric and $445 for rent.
He is also has a hearing in December for SSI benifits. He's had 12 jobs in the span of 4 years and keeps getting fired for what he says "being too strict with rules" and because his social skills are very poor.
Some of the judges here have very low approval rates. I'm worried even with the above info, that the judge will still deny him benefits. We don' meet with the lawyer until next month about the hearing in December.
It sounds like his expressive/receptive language skills are very poor which is often associated with Asperger's. What do you mean HFA is not in the DSM-IV? If he is diagnosed with HFA (High Functioning Autism) that falls under Autistic Disorder in the DSM-IV. In the DSM5 coming out spring of next year (maybe) there is no Aspergers and he would be under Autism Spectrum Disorder. Then they would rate his social/communcation skills and his repetitive/rigid behaviors. It sounds like he might get a moderate (level 2) rating on his social/communicaiton skills perhaps qualifying him for more services than an Asperger's diagnosis alone.
