I have a 20yr old severally autistic girl who is having female problems. She needs a pelvic exam but I don't know if she can handle all that comes with a pap smear. She will not undersrtand what is happening nor will she be able to answer any questions. Does any one have any suggestions on how to go about this or have any specialists in the Chicago area. Thanks

Have you discussed this with whoever does the exam? It might be possible for her to be given some medication to relax her?

This is probably a really stupid question, but do they have special gynecologists that specialize in this sort of thing. I have a young boy, so we will not have to deal with this BUT he has a special pediatric dentist that specializes in dealing with children with sensory issues/autism. Maybe you could find a doctor like that for woman's issues?
