Does anyone live in South Carolina?
My husband and I are very seriously considering relocating to South Carolina (Charleston), and we're trying to figure out what is in our son's best interest as far as services are concerned. Here in NY, we *supposedly* have excellent services (although I haven't seen any), but all of the facilities that even offer these supposedly great services are located right in the middle of the GHETTO. I don't care how wonderful their programs are, I'm not dropping my almost 2 year old off in the middle of a dangerous city.
I've heard mixed reviews of South Carolina's services. One one hand, I heard that there is an autism academy that supposedly provides services. I would love to know more about this. I have also heard that the state of SC has an autism waiver (something like that) that gives 30 hours of ABA per week to children with Autism. This sounds too good to be true - does anyone know if there is a catch to that? I also heard of someone on the internet moving to Charleston for their autism services. But then I've heard people say that the services are terrible and that they've had to leave the state just to keep their autistic child safe, and that the school system is one of the worst - so I honestly have no idea what to think.
Does anyone know first hand how the autism services are in South Carolina? Would anyone know where I can turn to find out?
Thanks so much!!

Hi!
I live in Charleston, and from what I understand the academy was started by parents who were frustrated by the lack of services in the area. Here is the website:

What are your main reasons for wanting to move down here? Have you ever lived in the south before? I am happy to offer input, just let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi, I used to live in Beaufort County, SC.
It's a beautiful area, all islands with 21 route connecting. Parris Island Marine Corps base is there and there's a 24 hour Walmart in a shopping center with other stores to meet all basic needs.
(not that i support Walmarts)
The area is in the Lowcountry, Hunter's Island park and beach is 15 mins away or less from Beaufort.
Seabrook, Sheldon are other nearby towns yet are farther out inland.
Hilton Head Island is the richer area in the county.
There is an Autism psychologist in the area with 15+ years of practice.
There are a lot of Autism tutors in the area to help children in Beaufort County, SC.
I really loved living in Beaufort, it's kind of a small town feel to it. There's a bowling alley, as for things to do there's an yearly water festival. If you own a boat you'll love the area.
The beach is near, they have a skatepark for kids, more town parks, nature preserves all in driving distance closeby.
The major medical hospital is in town in Beaufort and even has a boat ambulance with a special dock for it.
I have medicare, and have went to the medical medicare clinic there, and two different doctors i have seen there were so pleasant, it was the best experience with doctors ever. They were so caring and understanding towards me. I have not seen this in NY or Fl, maybe it's southern hospitality at it's finest, yet these doctors were ones who really cared about people.
