These meds are not something you take for a while. It is a lifelong treatment plan

It depends, actually.

It worries me the way doctors always recommend the person be on the meds for life, especially when they're prescribed for an issue that can be situational (eg depression).

I don't think it should be an automatic 'you need these forever'. Unless the problem being treated is too severe for this to be done safely, I would like to see people on psych meds taking medication 'holidays' every so often, to see how they are without meds and if their needs may have changed. Especially since some negative side effects come on gradually enough that you don't notice them until you take the person off the meds, or else mimic symptoms of the person's condition and therefore might be misattributed.

If the person consistently does worse on the medication holidays, then it's reasonable to say they need to remain on the meds indefinitely. But I don't think that should be assumed as soon as they get the prescription.

I don't think people like to mess with the meds if they work and the side effects are not too bad. From what I have read on here, it is a hard thing to fine tune, and people get nervous about what will happen if they take a break, or if for some reason it may not work if they try to go back on after a break. Then they would have to try all over again and find what works. There is so much trial and error, and the results seem to be very unpredictable relative to standard meds.
