Just had a report back from my daughter's first assessment. The paediatric ASD service said the next diagnostic appointment will be in the next few months. It's a long process!

It mentions that she occasionally perseverated on vocabulary - have looked it up but still not sure exactly what they mean. Does anyone have a real life example?

Thanks

Perserverations in vocabulary- repeating a word or phrase, she's 'stuck' on it and can't go further, she can speak fluently but then she gets to the point where she repeats the same word over and over again (it can be part of echolalia but not neccesserily), example- one kid I work with is not fluent in speech but in special condition he speaks or blabs , then gets to the point where he perseverates ' agda agda agda agda agda' with no eye contact (meaningful word in my language)...so yes perseverations and echolalia can be problem, but they are usually good sign of verbal exression which is often used positively in speech therapy... wish you all the best

My son has always met his verbal milestones, but he has had tons of pragmatic language/socila communication issue and much of his early language development has consisted of echolalia and perseveration. He still perseverates on phrases and words that he uses idiosyncratically eithr for no obvious reason or for a different purpose than the word phrase is intended. Sometimes he does it as a stim. I don't really think it is a problem per se other than if other people give the child issues with it socially. I don't think it prevents typical speech, so much as it is a different developmental path towards it.
