They are offering almost all their courses free now, online. But you don't get credit for them. They will send you books as well. I posted about that in Random, then wondered if they had anything on autism and I typed it in search and there's a good bit. This is a link to the results page. All of these are the ones offered at Open Course at MIT.

There's no time like the present. What's stopping you from going ahead and starting?

All the material is online I believe.

I'm curious, is the unit content the same as units offered to regular MIT students? if so then on campus students are paying tuition fees purely for the accreditation only...

Yep, it's the same thing. And yes, they are paying for the degree. I doubt seriously anybody goes to college just to learn something and not care whether or not they get a degree. They want to be able to get a good job. I doubt you could get the same job even if you took everything they took, if you didn't have that degree.

ETA: My daughters fiancé is going to take some of the programming ones. He said you can learn that stuff then go to an independent testing place and be tested on it and certified. Too bad you can't do that with other topics.

Although someone told me years ago that in some state, I can't remember which, you could take the bar exam without even going to law school and if you passed you could be a lawyer. So, you could teach yourself, theoretically. I don't know if that's true or if anybody ever did that or not, and if they did what kind of lawyer they turned out to be. But it's a fairly cool concept.

Actually there are plenty of people (NTs) who do just what you describe...

Well, if they have the money to spend on a university just to learn something that won't do them any good in their career, then more power to them. It's something I'd love to do and I'm sure others would too, but spending all that money on something that will never make you any money seems wasteful.
