What do you do to encourage a love of books and stories with less than verbal teens?

Especially with special interests in Disney movies like Toy Story, preschool tv, example Barney, and like, zero attention span?

Have you tried graphic novels? They are are longer than a normal comic book but more fun and easier to read than a regular novel. I just did a google search for Disney graphic novels and Pixar graphic novels and the results were quite prolific. It might be a good stepping stone to get him/her interested in books in general.

I, too, was going to mention graphic novels. Also, for my son--who is very verbal, but a reluctant reader--there are books that we can get on his Kindle where he can turn on a voiceover. I forget what the function is called, but he likes reading that way. He actually reads while he listens to someone else read.

That is awesome.

I would never have thought of trying out graphic novels.

But Disney does do them!

You can also try "traditional" manga - japanese graphic novels. Some are just one volume and others have 50+ and more.

Just make sure you don't get ones with adult content. There are a lot of series allowed in elementary/middle/high school that SHOULDN'T be!!

Thank you all for your ideas. And I got to bust some of my own preconceptions. The books went over really well! And I was so unsure!
