Until I saw this, I was quite cautious about toddlers being dxd.

My son was way ahead of his milestones, but he definitely showed these signs. I just thought he didn't engage with people b/c he is male. I'm not sure what kind of help anyone would have given him or if early intervention would have changed anything though.

Interesting video. Oddly (or perhaps not), I can see the continuing impulses of many of those same behaviors in myself even to this day.

My daughter would have been a perfect toddler to videotape for this. Actually, watching it made me feel kind of sad as it brought back memories. Though I don't know why, because she is doing very well now and I couldn't be more pleased with how far she has come.

She was diagnosed at 22 months, but around 20 months, I think I could tell. I just didn't want to deal with it. Actually, at 20 months and even before that, I thought she was mentally ret*d, which is funny in hindsight because she actually has a high IQ (estimated).

but see, my DS is high functioning, and as a toddler, he did most of the NT stuff AND the ASD stuff. He did pretend, he did look at me to share his fun, he did vocalize and he could follow a pointed finger. He also DID fixate on toys, he did get sucked in and tune out everything, he did respond to his name when he was in the mood, he didn't respond when he was in the fixated zone.

I look back at videos of DS now and wonder how I didn't know, but then again, he had so many NT skills mixed in that's why!

I agree that hind site is 20/20 - Our oldest was not diagnosed until she was in 2nd grade because she had so many NT skills in addition to her autistic tendencies. Plus she is our oldest so we didn't really have anything to compare with - we just thought she was quirky.
