There's an annual event here that teaches fairly severely autistic kids to ride a bike. If you check out the link you can see pictures of the special bike they use:
http://www.crimsoncenteroutreach.org/ican-bike---formerly-lose-the-training-wheels.htmlMy severely autistic son did Lose the Training Wheels when he was 8 and he learned to ride a bike in 4 days. It was completely amazing, and I would recommend it highly.
I also looked into getting a 3-wheel recumbant bike a while ago for my younger son who's also autistic (who isn't great at bike-riding and I don't think ever will be because he can balance but he gets distracted and forgets to steer/pedal so crashes) but he will not sit on my friend's 3-wheel recumbent bike at all, and it is kind of a weird feeling, so I don't really blame him. I recommend you find one he can try out (away from the stress of the store too) just to check that it will work better.
Hey, thanks for the heads up about the "Lose the Wheels" program, I will look it up. My boy can ride really well with training wheels, but we took them off two weeks ago and he has been covered in bruises since, even with the knee & elbow pads and the helmet !
Of course, the pain doesn't seem to bother him, but the bruises bother US !
