respite offer

Hello :)
I'm a 18 year old student (female) in the east bay area. I'm interested in providing respite for a few hours a week (no pay). I am good with children and I have experience with autism. Please message me directly if you are interested and I will give you more information about myself.

sweet of you to offer, but our ASD child is too old and high functioning for us to need that.

and even then ... honestly, I'm not sure I would be comfortable connecting it through a public forum. Have you considered visiting some of the nearby ASD specialized schools and posting there?

That's a good idea, thanks! It was suggested to me to use facebook but since I don't have one I thought wrongplanet might work instead but I hadn't thought about people being uncomfortable. Thanks for letting me know.

I worry about you, too. As with any public forum, this place attracts a large number of people who are not who they say they are.

But we've got so many special schools just across the bay from you, and probably on your side, too. Then you can get the face to face, which is more trustworthy (if still not perfect).

Do you think you could pm me with some suggestions (if you have the time)? I'm new to the area and if I was still at home I would have asked people from my school but I don't know any places here.

It is really good to offer, but dw is entirely correct - but obviously a great thing you've done as you've made a connection.

If you go through a local organisation they may be able to offer you training or get the paperwork you need (I work with kids in the UK as a volunteer and I have to have a criminal records check)

I live in Oakland. I don't need any respite care, but if you really want to volunteer, I am sure I could direct you to some programs. Message me if you are interested. That is a really great thing you are doing.
