Would Your Kids Want To Participate In This?
Hello! I have Aspergers and ADHD, and I recently self-published a book about my thoughts and opinions. Having finished that, I have recently gotten an idea for a new book. It is called Our Amazing Brains, and it will be for, by and about kids whose brains work in different ways.
This book is geared towards neurologically diverse kids of all ages. And since it is for kids, I'd like to invite kids to participate! If you have a child who has autism, Aspergers, ADHD, Tourettes, a learning disability, sensory processing disorder, is gifted, etc, please consider asking them to contribute to this project! Kids DO NOT need an actual diagnosis of any sort in order to participate... they just have to have an amazing brain! (Note: All kids' brains are amazing in some way. The idea here is not to exclude kids who do not have diagnoses, but to include kids whose brains work in all kinds of ways.)
To participate, here is what kids need to do.
A. ALL ABOUT YOU
Here is a list of questions that kids can answer about themselves. They can either answer the questions in their own writing, or dictate to an adult. Adults, feel free to skip any questions your kids have a hard time answering, or questions you or they are not comfortable with them answering. If your child is not able to communicate enough to answer these questions, an adult can fill out the questions with what they know or feel about the child.
1. Name (or nickname or initials) and age. You are NOT required to give your child's full name or any name at all, if you feel uncomfortable... Initials, a nickname, or even a "pen name", would be fine!
2. Diagnosis, if any. (If they are comfortable sharing.)
3. What is your favorite thing to do?
4. What is your favorite thing about yourself?
5. What things are easy for you?
6. What things do you have a hard time with?
7. Who helps you the most? How do they help you?
8. What makes you different from other kids your age?
9. What makes you happy?
10. What makes you sad?
11. What makes you angry?
12. What are you proud of?
13. What do you want to be or do when you grow up?
14. Have you ever been bullied? How do you feel about bullying? Is there anything you would like to say to kids who bully others, or to kids who get bullied?
15. What advice would you give to other kids?
16. Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about?
B. ALL ABOUT YOUR BRAIN
This is where your child can share something special that he likes to do. It can be anything at all that makes your child feel proud. It can be a story he wrote, a picture he drew, a jigsaw puzzle he put together, a science experiment he did, a sport he likes to play, etc. If it is a story or piece of artwork, just send it. If it is something physical, you can include a photo of it, if possible, or just tell us about it.
C. A photo or self-portrait of your child.
All of the contributions will be put together into a book called Our Amazing Brains!
Because I am self-publishing this book, I do not expect a large profit from it. I would like to at least make sure that each child who contributes gets his own copy of the book to keep. If the amount of royalties goes beyond the cost of a book for each contributor, I would like to find a way to share the rest of the profits with the children. I still need to work this out, though!
If you know a child who would like to participate in this project, please have them send the items for A, B and C to my email address: angel_the_alien@aol.com. (If it is easier to send something through snail mail, just let me know through email, and I will give you my mailing address!)
Thanks!
Angel The Alien
My daughter might be interested. I'll ask her.
Including a photo or any real likeness of the child may be problematic for some parents. Especially parents who's kids are not old enough to make their own decision about anonymity yet. Just so you know...
