I was diagnosed with Asperger's at 14. My parents were told at that point there was little they could do for me I was just too old. So after many years of horrible social experiences and abusive realationships I feel terrified of trying to help my son now that he has been diagnosed as well. He is about to be seven and will often at night when I tuck him in ask me, "Mommy how do I make friends? Can you help me make friends? Can you tell the teacher to make the kids be my friend?" It rips me apart because I know how he feels but have no idea how to advise him. I try to tell him to ask kids if he can play but he often gets turned down on the spot even by children at the park. It has made him not want to ask at all for fear of being rejected. Now its about to be his birthday party and I invited everyone in his class, not one person has called to say they were coming. I know its ridiculous but I keep thinking if I had tried to make friends with some of the parents this wouldn't have happened to him. I did try to talk to his best friends mom the other day but got a strange reaction. I feel like I want to fix this but dont know how.

I was in the same boat.
When it became apparent that he was having trouble making friends at school I had nothing useful to say. I don't know how to do it either.

The best thing that I have seen on this is the advice given in the videos Alex made for older kids/college students on this site. I think the insights from that program are very applicable to all ages. But I could be wrong! I am no good at any of this.

In my experience the easiest way for an ASD kid to make friends is to just meet the right people. Try looking for after-school groups either for ASD or developmentally disabled kids or for kids who share an interest with your son.
