Hello, I am a newly diagnosed adult mother in a blended family with two older kids and a 2 year old son who has yet to be diagnosed but he is definitely high functioning autism, he a time and talks without moving his mouth and makes sound with his throat, he is also obsessed with letters and numbers. He can find even the nearly invisible numbers on the bottoms of toys etc. On our street he stops to look at the mailbox and license plates. Does anyone else have things like this going on?

Our children have grown. However, if you find that you child has an intense interest in one area, you may be able to work with that interest and see if you can expand it to other areas. For example if you have a short book, you may be able to help him learn to count by using the page numbers.

My son's own obsession with letters & numbers eventually led to teaching himself how to read and count before he could technically talk. If you can find ways to utilize your son's abilities in other areas of his life have some fun with it. :)

My son can read a little bit now, and he can count to 30. He likes to watch the phonics cartoons on Netflix which is ok but he always wants to watch them and he gets weird if he watches too much tv. It is a struggle for us to be able to tell if he is just excited or if he is overwhelmed by something. He has sensory problems as well.

My son was similar at that age. He learned to count to 100 and spell lots of words before he had any communication ability at all. Now at 4 he's doing well overall and getting better with real communication though he is still significantly behind NT peers.
