Hi,
I have a 12 years boy(7th grade). He is having Autism. From the past few months, he constantly checking his pant. The reason he says is, he is checking the distance between the pant and underwear. Even while walking or is in the car, he holds or checks the pant most of the time

Today we went to a movie. In the theater also, most of the time he checks his pant. He is not in relaxed state at all. In the school also, it is disturbing him too much. Teachers also told the same.

What should I do?

Thanks in advance
Sri

I am confused.

"pants" means underwear in UK English and trousers in American English. I don't understand what he is doing or thinks he is doing from the description. At first I thought, "he is adjusting his underwear constantly" but then I reread and noted the "distance between pant and underwear" and now I am just confused.

It sounds like something is physically or psychologically uncomfortable for him. Can you ask him for a more precise explanation of what he needs to "check?"

Or maybe he is just interested in feelings in that area as people are from that age onward? Maybe he needs special training in appropriate public conduct?

Apologies if these speculations are off the mark--I am not sure I really understand what you are describing and asking.

If you read it carefully, underwear is mentioned, so distance between underwear and underwear would make no sense.

I would put money on it being trousers.

Yes, that's exactly what I just noted. But I don't understand the concept of "distance between underwear and trousers." They are general in contact at the waist and conform to varying degrees to the configuration of the legs in other areas and so are not in any fixed relationship but are continuously changing surfaces that move with the body.

What would he be "checking" -- I don't get it.

It seems to me that some sensation or idea must be behind this behavior, but it's totally unclear what that might be.

Maybe the OP can give more detail that will help, or maybe the young man can explain or give some indication if asked?

I may be speaking out of turn as I'm not on the spectrum but I was wondering how close fitting, or not, the pants are.

Sri sahib, are they kurta pants, or tailored pants in the western style?

Just wondering if it IS a tactile thing and he either doesn't like certain materials or they're too loose and/or tight.

Just a thought.

Definitely a sensory thing. I understand it--especially since I'm gaining weight.

He means pants (trousers) and its distance to underwear.

I experience this, too....though I make sure I don't check my pants in the street constantly.

You have to teach him to do the same; otherwise, people might not think too well of him.

He wears jeans trousers(pants). He used to pulls up his trousers as much as possible. He said, the reason why he is pulling up was, so nobody can see his back. Suppose if we sit down on the ground, bend forward little bit, the shirt on our back pulls up little bit. Here he wants to make sure no gap between his trousers and shirt. Even though, the shirt is long enough ,the trousers is tight enough, he used to pull up the trousers too often even in public.

So we redirected/teached him to, make sure the trousers is just below the bellybutton. Then he stopped the trousers pulling up. Then started making sure the trousers is just below the bellybutton. He is making this check always, except he is in night dress.

Over a year, he is in this behaviour/ritual.

Sounds like an OCD thing, if it's not causing problems then let it be, he might grow out of it.

Maybe he's afraid his underwear will show in the back when he sits down. Maybe he's worried about what women call "visible panty line". Maybe he's got some *ahem* puberty-related concerns.

A belt and/or suspenders might help ease his mind, depending on his specific concern.
