Wow, how surprising.

The fact is, in these 73 years since the formal discovery of child autism, we've been treating the wrong patients, all along. Kids are fine. Adults are the ones with intellectual disability and in need of behavioral treatment. You treat the adults, and the kids grow up just fine. That's the sad reality about autism. We've invented a disorder that does not exist...all the while pretending not to see the white elephant in the room.

I've recently watched the movie "Life, Animated."

The son (Owen Suskind) is adorable, not doubt. Parents are loving, no doubt. But I had to hold back my frustration. I really couldn't stand this type of movie anymore. You see the son drawing lovely pictures, right? Yes, I see the parents moving mountains to get a film made about their son. But just one question: how come I don't see the parents lifting one single finger to draw one single picture for their son?

Same story with the parents of Nadia Chomyn, Stephen Wiltshire, Phillip Bushey and an endless list of parents of autistic children. The children had to grow up all on their own. And the sad part is, the story repeats itself, year after year, from one family to another family. When are parents ever going to learn? Sometimes it's so much easier for me just to sit back, and watch Mother Nature do her job.

I am not even gonna bother asking about making video clips for their children...hopeless, pointless. The funny thing is, for the new generation of school kids, they are all savvy about these technical skills. (Yes, today's 7 or 8 year-olds are learning about animation video making, robotics, and 3D printers.) There is a span of 40 years...adults in this span of 40 years are totally unable to learn new skills, unable to change their behavior. They are the "lost generation." Unfortunately, we will continue to see autistic children perish at the hands of their parents, for another 40 years. In the name of love...yes, all in the name of love.

It's like the parents of Carly Fleischmann telling the world that, at Carly's age 11, they discovered she could communicate by typing. Wow, miracle of miracles. But just one question: how come it was at age 11, but not at age 4?

Parents make decisions, parents live with the consequences of their decision. When the night falls, no need to cry.

All have little Ramanujans in their hands, autism is something to celebrate, to cheer. But parents have managed to ruin their children's lives. How about developing some real skills for your children? I don't want to see any more autistic artists. You can only gain so much sympathy from others: our society is not built for all autistic children to become reality TV stars. There is a fatigue threshold. Come on, get skills, work, contribute to the society and make a honest living, like everyone else.
