All we wanted was a Trilobite birthday cake.

We went to the local grocer were we always go to to have my son's cake's made and he wants it to have a triolbite on it. The avatar I have actually is his favorite.

I printed it out on my printer on photo paper. Put it in a manilla envelope with all the details on the front-done together with my son as he wanted to be sure it was just right and had no words on the cake waht so ever.

SO we wrote "no words."

Went to the bakery, told the lady we needed a birthday cake and she started asking all the regular questions (whilst all the while my son-being the boy we know and love- is going on and on about how he loves trilobites, the type we have the photo of, and when it lived, and what it did-ahhhh...so hard to talk to people-I really need to write a social story for him on this-today!) and when I pulled out the triolbite pic-of course I got a weird look and then she looked at my son almost as if to say "this is what you really want on your cake?" but she did not and then gave me the " well I do not know if we can use this image... blah blah blah, if we cannot we can plastic rap it and lay it on the cake."

I said No-that is not OK, I could do that myself. It is not copy written or TM stamped just please could you do this for us? I have how we want it colors and everything right here on the envelope."
I go over all this with her including the no words on the cake and what does she do....

she turns to my son and says "So big guy do you want happy birthday and your name on the cake?"

AHHH!! !! 8O

My son losses it and says "can't you read on the envolpe!?! ! it says NO WORDS!! !" SO I apologize to her and tell her we have everything right here for her and she can just keep the photo and envelope all together to show the baker in the morning.

SO she says she will have to ask the head baker in the morning about the image use and call me.
Then she offered my son a doughnut hole and of course we took it out of sheer trying to be nice. Knocked the trantrum right out of him it did.

I seriously did not think it would be a problem seeing that it is not a charater or professionally done picture.

SO now I am trying to prepare for that call tomorrow and am visualizing it being a go, or my son is not going to be happy. I am also going to try to come up with another plan.

I wish I had those Autism cards in my purse today because boy I could have used one.

:( I wish I lived closer-I would make that cake for you. I LOVE doing the design for birthday cakes-especially if the person is very specific :)

if i lived closer, i'd certainly make it for you~ i've made spider cakes, fire engine cakes, cat cakes, coca cola & coffee cup cakes ....you name it, i've probably made it.
i'd try a different baker if at all possible......if all else fails~ you could probably make it with your son. doesn't look that hard to make a trilobite cake that is shaped like a trilobite . use a round cake pan & have him help you. could probably make the legs out of pipecleaners. since you have the image, you could trace the image onto clear acetate, and then enlarge it onto the cake's surface using an overhead projector.you can then trace the image that is shown on the cake onto the cake's surface. they make cake markers now~ ones that are just like markers, but the contents of the marker are edible.

No, that lady could have used a card like "stupid bakery woman, please be patient". In this case, it was NOT your son who butchered communication. The woman could have listened...

SHeesh, that sucks! I make my kids birthday cakes now. Store cakes suck. I do like the whipped cream icing, haven't figured that one out for myself (not that I've tried.) I made a Hello Kitty cake for my neighbor's daughter before Hello Kitty got so popular again and started appearing on cakes in stores. I make my son a castle when he was going through a short castle obsession. Cake decorating is actually very easy. I never took a class, but places like JoAnn's, Michael's and Hobby Lobby offer cake decorating classes at a reasonable price. They even offer them for free occasionally.

I hope they'll do the cake!

Please tell your son that I wished him a happy birthday...from one trilobite enthusiast to another.

Glad you are getting your cake!

I will have to post a pic of our Trilobite "Fritz"
(That is what the lady at the store called him, and we kept the name).

He is a lot more narrow then the one in your Avatar, I am sure you and your son could tell us more about him!

holy cow! I'll need to try those out one of these days :D Icing/bags tend to cramp my hand after a while-last cake I made was free-hand drawing of a care bear (looking off of a coloring book) and I hated that the icing kept clumping up in some spots >.< I was getting really really annoyed. When I went to fill it in, I didn't realize how detailed I had made it and by the end of it all, my hand was cramped up for 2 days!! ! lol.
