ENVIRONMENTAL ACCOMMODATIONS:


Alternative work space
Do Not Touch – Ask permission to touch in all circumstances (ie: when consoling or redirecting)
Strategic seating / preferential seating
Proximity to instructor
Reduction in all sensory stimuli including light, visual, audio, smell, tactile
Work sheets that are not visually overwhelming
Study carrel
Minimizing background noise
Quiet setting
Use of headphones
Use of FM system or Surround Sound Field System
Special lighting (use of incandescent light bulbs in desk lamps may help)
Supervise transition times with care and cueing 5-10 minutes before changes
Supervision at all times in both structured and unstructured, especially recess, lunch rooms and hallways
Early or delayed entry to avoid being touched in line-ups. Give a job such as door person to aid in self-esteem and prevent incidents. Understand the tactile defensiveness
Provide a safe place for retreat that is not seen as punitive
Have a safety plan in place
Assistive devices or
adaptive equipment such as: fidget toys that are essential for concentration
squeeze balls
play dough
chewing gum
sour candies
straws
tennis balls on all chair and desk legs
FM system

ASSESSMENT ACCOMMODATIONS:

Extended time limits
Alternative settings, a quiet room free of distractions
Space tests and assignments to prevent feelings of being overwhelmed
Reduction in the number of tasks used to assess a concept or skill
Extra time for processing the questions as well as the answers
Prompts to refocus
Reduced /uncluttered format
Reading of test or exam to student
Assistive devices or adaptive equipment such as calculators, reference charts, spell checkers, computers, voice to text software
Review of sample questions and tests
Samples of what is required to meet the marking standards on the rubric (what does the finished product look like)
Verbatim scribing
Alternative test formats including audiotapes, oral, computer, type of exam or test
