I often listen to books on CD in the kitchen. Mysteries are my favorite. I didn't think my kids were paying much attention as they wander in and out waiting to be fed. They don't watch any detective shows on T.V.
Yesterday, though, I got a surprise. My five year old often "makes movies" by setting up a tableau of his action figures and telling a story about them as he moves them around. It's a solitary game and he doesn't like anyone else to touch them. This time, however, he came to get me to show me a movie he made for me. It was a detective movie complete with "crime blood", an "old lady nurse detective" (Anne Perry's Hester Monk?), a soldier-killer named Sam and a victim named Pete Larsen. The motive was apparently copying fish. I don't undertand it either. When he was done telling the story he looked me in the eyes (very rare) and asked me if I liked my story. I said I thought it was an awesome story.
