Good Outcome at School Today

I had a good outcome at school today after a bad start to the year (our school year runs from late January - early December).

Last year, the school had a fantastic Special Ed teacher, fantastic Vice Prinicpal and fantastic upper school Vice Principal (Tarmie Bryant).

They all left at the end of last year and have been replaced by a lazy, nasty Special Ed teacher, disorganised useless Vice Principal and a horrible upper school Vice Principal.

Anyway, the new Special Ed withdrew all support for the boys, and unsurprisingly, they've deteriorated significantly ... multiple meltdowns etc

The lady who was the fantastic upper school Vice Principal (Tarmie Bryant)is now the Acting Principal. I e-mailed her my concerns this morning at 9am, and by lunch-time some changes had been made.

My 9 year old has now been allocated Project Time. He goes to the computer lab by himself for 20 minutes every day between morning tea and lunch. (A teacher aide is there doing paperwork).

He will work on his 'Dear Diary' about the Gold Rush in Australia. His current interests are computers, creative writing and the Gold Rush.

So my 9 year old came home from school today with happy, sparky eyes. He has been so excited all evening. He is also relieved to have that regular, allocated time-out away from the noise of the class.

I have been asking for a regular break from the classroom for him for 7 weeks, but the lazy, nasty special ed teacher refused.

I would love to be a fly on the wall when the Acting Principal (Tarmie Bryant) meets with the new lazy, special ed teacher.

Lat year, Tarmie Bryant gave our 9 year old's classroom teacher extensive 'counselling' for his refusal to make accommodations for our 9 year old.

After extensive 'counselling' the classroom teacher was doing everything I asked.

Tarmie is very effective. She has a daughter with ADHD and told me last year she understands all the crap I have to put up with (her words exactly)!

I'm SO happy for you Helen, that you've found an ally who can help you implement what you know will be most beneficial for your children. How lucky you are. Usually the lazy ones don't last too long cause apparently our kids wear them out pretty fast.
Ive been lucky also, in that her whole school is VERY supportive. When I pick her up every afternoon and we walk down the halls, everyone seems to know her and says "Hi" to her. (which she and I both love admittedly) Shes been moved into "mainstream" Gym and Music and is doing great so far.
The whole city is pretty good about it actually, they've trained their police, EMTs and Firemen here about some of the obstacles they may face when dealing w/ autistics. Lucky for us that we live in a state full of "rugged individualists" that respect others differences.
I would have liked to be a fly on thae wall for that myself. I hope she "Tore him a new one" Feel sorta bad about the "Schadenfreuda" (that is SO spelled wrong) but not TOO bad

I'm glad that you guys have children who are doing well partially due to good school personnel.

We are currently stuck in a situation where there's really very well-intentioned school teachers, but the administration just doesn't EVER seem to get it. I've never though that homeschooling would be very effective for my son (although I personally would love to have him home), but I'm seriously considering it sometimes.

Apparently, though, Australia and Alaska are good places for kids with aspergers! Yay!

Another good day!

I had a meeting with the Principal, classroom teacher and Vice Principal.

I told them that my 9 year old is passionate about creative writing, computers and making films.

So they are going to get him to write the classroom blog and take photos. They will be putting this up on the school's website soon. He will spend a lot of time learning how to get the website up.

He will also film a school play, then be given the project of editing it.

I am so excited for him! If I'm this excited, he'll be jumping to the moon with joy!

He is a hardworking kid who works well independently. You could put him in a school room by himself, and if you set him interesting work, he would work all day without supervision.

The classroom teacher has noticed his fabulous focus and has been impressed by his creative writing.

Also, he's allowed to go on WrongPlanet when he has spare time (he finds the school work easy and finishes quicker than other kids). I suggested WrongPlanet, thinking they'd never agree. I was so happy when they said yes!

My son joined WrongPlanet about 10 months ago and is up to about 700 posts. I 'sold' the idea of WrongPlanet saying it has helped improved his typing skills. Also, it is great for his self-esteem coming on WrongPlanet.

I'll keep you up to date.
