Hi everyone,

I just thought I'd let you know how journal writing is going for my son.( He's 7 with an AS diagnosis). Lots of people had given me tips and strategies and they've been very helpful, so thank you!

Yesterday in class, my son wrote 5 sentences about his party! That's amazing considering that at the start of the year he wasn't writing anything at all. He does have an aide who helps him, as he needs lots of prompting, but hey!

I developed a 'Writing Folder' for J, where I've attempted to make journal/sentence writing a visual process. Once he got the hang of writing of one sentence, then it became two, now sometimes three and more recently he's adding a bit more. I'm so proud of him!

(But of course along came the idiot speech therapist last week who said to me that all he does is write the same sort of things. I just can't win!)

careful now, or he'll turn out like me and write exponentially better than he can speak :)

though that may be a good thing, I haven't figured out that much yet. Many AS are identified by their inability to read social cues and understand when they've talked too long about something their audience isn't interested in. I never had that problem personally because I would just write everything down. On and on and on and on: my Ramblings.

Well, congratulate J for me, 5 sentences is the first of many paragraphs he will inevitably write.

That is a happy moment.

Here is a technique that has worked fairly well with my son.

I have him verbally discuss the topic to be written about.

For each idea that comes up, he writes down a one word summary of the idea
as a reminder.

Once you have all of ideas keyed like that.

Consider the order in which they are to be presented
Mark them 1 .. N

Constuct a leading sentence

then for each keyword, construct one sentence

Construct a closing sentence.

Breaking it into little pieces like that, makes less demand on short term memory,
and reduces the resultant stress.

Thanks guys!

Pundit23, I'd love my son to write his ramblings down! What do you ramble about?

You've got some good ideas EvilTeach - thanks - I'll take them on board.
