daughter meets new therapist this week
My daughter, whose current dx is ADHD-hyperactive/impulsive type, is going to meet her very first therapist this week. ( this was not initiated by us, but by the dr at the mh clinic. seems that in order to medicate daughter, she "needs" to be seen by a therapist).....daughter's been on the waiting list for a therapist for several months. during this time, the dr has prescribed several different meds. first one was concerta. dropped that one after daughter began hallucinating!. second one was tenex. daughter has had some success with this one reducing her anxiety level & increasing her ability to focus we aren't seeing as much of the excessive talking, fidgeting, squirming, crying. it's still there, though. and we can definitely notice the difference when she hasn't taken her med....... third med we've tried, in addition to the tenex, is geodon. frankly, the only thing it seems to be doing is putting her to sleep.
the meds have not helped her to socialize any better than when we started this whole mess. she still misinterprets lots of social interactions. is bossy. has no friends other than the family pets , her Webkinz, and her Littlest Pet Shop animals.
i'm hoping that the therapist will be able to help daughter, but frankly I'm nervous and skeptical. i mean, trying to explain the world of an aspergers family is daunting ( lets face it, most people in the outside world have no concept of what it's like to go to Walmart. or what it's like trying to feed a family who insists that foods don't touch each other. or what it's like to deal with other people staring at you because you " can't control your child".) i worry that the therapist is going to look at me like i'm a total nut.
oh my. i wish i didn't have so many worries.

If the therapist is any good she won't look at you like you're a nut!!
We're so lucky with our therapist. After her psychology degree she did a 2 year post-graduate in Autism. She's been working at Tony Attwood's clinic for over 1 year now. So she understands!
I know that feeling about people looking at you because you can't control your child. GRRRR!

therapy appt went well. amazingly, after meeting daughter for 5 minutes, therapist asked if i thought daughter was on the spectrum !......therapist also wanted to know if daughter was receiving speech and language services, and if she always "talked that way"- at first, i couldn't quite figure out what she meant. i guess i'm so used to the way she talks. she doesn't have an impediment, but she talks in a somewhat odd tone. hard to descibe. she overexaggerates certain words, and/or syllables. also talks like a baby. she can control the baby talk.
therapist asked if we were going for a 2nd eval for daughter. she though it would be a good idea. i think it's a good idea too, but can't afford it. don't exactly trust the school system to dx her correctly.....and so it goes.
