Hypoglycaemia
Dear Aspies,
Can you help me about the anorexia and the metabolic syndrome of my son?
My son two times taken blood test on doctor's laboratory for glucose tolerance with the following results 22 May.
Fasting glucose in morning witout eating 95 mg /dl , 1 hour after drink a sweet liquid provided by the doctor on his laboratory 97 mg /dL and two hour after drinking the liquid 66 mg/dL. That is mean reactive hypoglycemia.
Similar results we had with the same tests before on month what show these Lab tests?
There is a link between anorexia and reactive hypoglycaemia?
Thanks
Themis

GEE, I would have thought that was about PERFECT! For hyPER, you don't have to worry about it until it is over 100. For hyPO, I thought 70 was the dangerous level. Wikipedia says "For many purposes, plasma glucose levels below 70 mg/dl or 3.9 mmol/L are considered hypoglycemic; ". Granted, you shouldn't trust wikipedia 100%, but I remember the 70 from someplace else. MY fasting is like 85 or so, and my high has been quite a bit over 100. If you are REALLY worried about your son here, talk to your doctor about getting a
"Glycolated hemoglobin or HbA1c" test. It tests the HISTORY of the range for like 3 months.
Has your son had a lot of hypoglycemia symptoms? It strikes me that most could be something else.
BTW I am NOT a doctor, and don't pretend to be. And it IS interesting that your sons blood sugar is SO stable. Still, what I am saying here may be dead on. I don't know what my blood sugar was like as a kid, and I think MY system isn't as stable as it should be. I am in my 40s, and my mother's family has a history of diabetes.
BTW the "Glycolated hemoglobin or HbA1c" test is a simple blood test and actually LESS trouble for you and your son than the other. It may be more expensive though, and does require blood to be drawn. It isn't just a prick as the other can be. It was suggested with me once when I slipped up and had something with sugar in it.
Your son is not the first Asperger's child I have encountered who also has reactive hypoglycemia. However, his results seem reasonably stable - unless he is experiencing real issues with symptoms, or he is dropping to dangerous levels (it seems more like his issue is starting off fairly high, rather than the danger of his low - just the discrepancy meant more to the diagnosis than the actual numbers).
I know very little about eating disorders, but I am aware of a link between reactive hypoglycemia and recovering anorexics. While it may require treatment, it is likely that if the anorexia (or the body's attempt to recover from the former anorexia) is causing the issues, they will stabilize over time.
I have hypoglycemia. Back when I was actually on medications, it made it a whole lot worse. I've passed out four times in total (since age thirteen) and I black out almost every day. Part of it could be from me being quite thin, but I'm certainly not anorexic. I don't really know what to tell you about medications, since nothing seemed to work for me. Good luck!
WHY did you pass out? The ONLY reason hypoglycemia is an issue is because you may feel weaker, be less able to think straight, and COULD go into a coma! Other than that, it seems like it would be a GOOD thing. HyPERglycemia can cause brittle blood vessels and can, either as a consequence, or in addition, cause brain damage, retinal damage, kidney damage, and lots of other things, including needing amputation of all limbs. Oh yeah, it can ALSO burn you out and give you the symptoms of hypoglycemia(outside of low blood sugar, of course).

I'm not really sure why I pass out sometimes. It's just this really bad feeling I get. First I start blacking out a lot. Then that's when I can't really see much at all. Then my ears start ringing to the point where I can't hear anything around me and then I start feeling a bit naucious. And at this point, there's no way I can really go anywhere else to rest for a bit (Trust me, I've tried!). Then I just pass out.
