what's in a label?/reevaluation necessary?
Question 1: Any opinion on the benefits of one diagnosis/ Aspergers rather than a potluck of diagnoses (adhd, nvld, mild pdd-nos, anxiety-nos). Don't all these things = Aspergers? For a 2nd evaluation, could I request this dx? Or, would that be an odd request? I don't like all these things attached to my son; it makes him seem enigmatic or indecipherable.
2nd question: has anyone had the school reevaluate your child using your independent evaluator ? (it is a reputable autism center). I'm a bit apprehensive. But, they are footing the bill (2,000 or so) and I feel like they would go ahead, eventually, and do it despite me by building up a case that they feel it's necessary. It's been two years since his last evaluation. I worry about conflicting/biased information from reevaluation and additional label added to the mix. Isn't there a conflict of interest? His indendent evaluation is what has provided his services under "autism".
Program appropriateness was raised at the meeting from Director.
Are they considering a new placement for him?
Any information would be immensly appreciated! Your experience and feedback has helped me numerous times! : ) It's a lonely world out here on the spectrum : (
(I'm posting here and on "general" discussion to get as much feedback as possible)

The labels affect the services you have access to and what the school / social services / etc. is required to do for you. On a personal level, I find them to be not that useful, but the labels do define what is available to you.
Being very pragmatic, I've tended to approach all this from "what do want for my child" and then "what do I need (labels included) to get him that."
I can't say a lot more because we've been lucky and the first round got me what I wanted (well, except for a few issues at the middle school, but that can't be fixed by a label).
