This is going to sound silly (probably stupid) I guess but what label should a child be under. My son was misdx for so many years and got labeled ED to get services like OT, Speech, and counseling, extra time on tests...but when he was finally dx with PDD then AS shouldnt he be labeled autistic. If so, can that just be changed in his annual IEP.
Second question is transition services, can I get that for him even though he is 17 and still has another year before graduation. I'm hoping it's not to late.

Thanks for any advice on this....his annual is coming up next week....

Not supid at all!

Yes, his label should be ASD instead of ED. It can be changed at the IEP meeting. I tend not to worry about which label is used so long as my children are getting the services they need. Sometimes though, a school has a kind of mind set that certain services go with certain labels. Then it becomes important. I don't like the ED label because some teachers here read that to mean "not trying" and "trouble maker" whilst they see ASD as "trying" and, unfortunitly, "stupid." It shouldn't be an issue to change the label at all though.

Its not to late for transititional services although it IS late. By law, I think they had to start when your son turned 16! In any case, wrightslaw has a section of articles on transitional planning. http://www.wrightslaw.com/info/trans.index.htm

You might also want to contact your state's Parent Training and Information center. They "should" have pamlets or fact sheets on New York's transitional laws. (Some centers seem to be much better than others but its a start. Here's the addresses of all the NY centers.)

Thanks Bee

I was pulling my hair out thinking that I blew it for my son. I called Resources for Children with Special Needs, they will get back to me but I also called the VESID program and hopefully they will get back to me. I never was told or heard about transitional services for kids.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! !
