What do you want in it? I play a 2d browser game called Pardus primarily; space-based.

Battlestar Gallactica Online is simple to play (right click would be helpful, not possible to remap it) but is horribly made. It's very 2d biased, many servers are very unbalanced, and even when Bigpoint fixes something players still get shafted, ie I lost half a planetoid of tylium during unscheduled downtime.

Star Trek Online is supposed to be free soon; no idea about gameplay.

FFXIV is free right now.

They made a multitude of great improvements since the screw up one year ago.

I haven't played in several months(no time) but I check back occasionally to see how its doing.

If you have fond memories of watching Cartoon Network and growing up with the likes of Dexter, Johnny Bravo, and the Powerpuff Girls then I recommend you check out FusionFall.

The game isn't getting nearly the amount of attention it deserves. D:

Wow, nobody has mentioned Lord of the Rings Online? Seriously? It's only the second most popular MMORPG out there... and it's free.

The Isengard expansion was released yesterday. Good stuff.

According to whom? Runescape is the most popular Free MMO, and World of Warcraft is the most popular Pay-to-Play MMO. Aside from that, Ive heard that LotRO has the worst tech and other support services of any MMORPG.

This is, in my opinion the best free to play MMORPG

LotRO is technically a p2p game, but you can get to level cap straight off the bat, for free. With their f2p model it's also possible to get almost all content for free, but it takes work. LotRO comes in second to WoW in number of players (don't know where it stands in subscribers because I know EVE is very popular).

All Epic quests (the plot) are free. These cover every area and every level up to 75, the new cap as of yesterday.

The first three areas are totally free.

Subsequent areas can be entered and you can grind landscape mobs, but have to purchase a Quest Pack to access the non-Epic quests and instances.

A lot of what you do in the game will result in you getting a Deed, which will award Turbine Points. Turbine Points are used to purchase Quest Packs and other things like cosmetic armour. It is possible to get all content for free by grinding out all your Deeds. Or, you can buy the Quest Packs for about $5 (sometimes they are on sale for as little as 50c).

Or you can subscribe for $10 a month and get everything except Expansion content for free.

I recommend Champions Online, a superhero MMORPG. While there are a number of perks for subscribers, and a number of items that can be purchased from the internal "C-store", it is entirely possible to play a very enjoyable game, all the way to top level, for completely free. The basic Silver account gives you two character slots, eight predefined Archetypes (varieties of superhero) to choose from, and a pretty fair array of costume parts to decorate your character (and unlike some games, if you get better gear later, it doesn't change your appearance). There are three completely optional Adventure Packs you won't be able to access, although with the latest addition, the Comic Series "Aftershock", they're getting away from that paradigm; there are nine more Archetypes and the ability to create Freeform characters that cost extra (in fact, the Freeform is one of the perks reserved for Gold-level subscribers); and of course there are even more costume bits available through the C-store.

I do have a Gold account; however, due to economic fluctuations, I'm going to have to let that account go inactive for a bit, so rather than fuss about with converting some characters back to Silver again, I've created a separate Silver account. To give you an idea of the possibilities for characters, here are my Gold heroes, and these are my Silvers.
