Hey, I am pretty new to 40k and I play Tau . I am building up my army to 1000pts, I just need a devilfish and another battlesuit, shame it is so expensive! I might buy a rulebook to share with my sister and cousin, have any of you had a big rulebook in the past - is the fluff and art inside it worth the cost vs waiting for the slim cutdown version.

I have the big 5th edition rulebook. Its very nice looking but I am a collector of books and love hardback stuff. The only thing is that when I brought the last rulebook it wasn't -quite- as expensive, about 60 or 55$ I think. There is very nice art in the book and its very pretty, I also like the pictures in the back of the painted armies and scenario battles. I haven't purchased the 6th edition book yet but waaaant it.

I think if/when I play Infinity I would buy the Combined Army or Aleph, I like those models the most and I like big awesome elite units.

Yeah, I'm a hardback lover myself (that just sounds wrong). I've always purchased the hard back version of the main rulebook when it's available. I think in the past (3rd ed.) they released the paperback version first.

Some people don't like the hardbacks because they can be hard to find rules in because of the extra pages of fluff and art work. They are also pretty hefty and it can get to be a chore to lug around a few army cases and army books.

One of the things you could wait for is to see what the first basic battle set contains. They will usually containa slimed down rulebook and 2 small battle forces. You usually don't save any money on the book but with the basic battle set you usually pick upsome useful minis, terain, fortifications and, templates.

In 5th Ed I brought the battle set rulebook from ebay for £5, but I think I will go get the fluffy hardback this time around, it should last me 4/5 years anyway.

It's really cool to see another fan of the Tau Empire. They have a very oriental vibe about them which is really cool. I think it kind of contributes to their appeal in some manner. For instance, in Fire warrior their melee weapon is what can be considered a futuristic variation of a Ninto/Ninjato blade, which is extremely badass. 8)

"Honor the Fire Caste"

I do plan on acquiring the Tau Codex soon (5th ed.) Either way, it will make for a fantastic read.

I read somewhere where that fire warriors don't carry melee weapons, but I could be wrong, and they remind also me of aspects of China and Japan. I know Tau and Eldar have the two oldest codexes, so although the 5th ed codex will be a good read it might go out of date within the year!

In the terrible game I played on the PC they did. I thought it was cool. I think that the melee aspect (featured in PC game) is something that is really cool because of it's unique correspondence with the cultural aspects of the race itself. Like if we look at Space Marines.. They have chainswords, hammers, etc. So really, the idea of the Tau itself having some form of a culturally linked melee weapon is really cool.

I used to love Warhammer 40k but my parents banned me from playing it because I spent all my money on the stuff for about 3 years. Ive not played it in over 5 years now but I would like to start playing it again at some point if I can find some like-minded people to play with.

I still play the Dawn of war game on PC though.

That kind of blows. There are worse venues to blow money on, if I were one of your parents I would have promoted it over say, you spending all your money on video games or pornography or alcohol. Not to say I don't like video games (I do), just always respected tabletop and if I had a child I'd be supportive of the hobby. I guess if the spending was getting out of hand I can understand, but still.
