Well, as surprising as it sounds, I didn't hate it. I wouldn't admit that to anyone, mind you. I also played it before I came across Corpse Party, and Corpse Party addresses pretty much every issue I had with the game. Plus, it's easy to acquire Corpse Party and its sequel. It's not easy to acquire Calling, I don't think, so it's especially hard to recommend Calling, except to those who either have a wii and not a psp or vita, but want to play something like Corpse Party, or someone who loves Corpse Party and wants something for the wii that has some similarities to it.
A little motion control is ok, but you may not like having to hold your arm straight to properly aim the camera, because your arm will kill you. If you can get through Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, this game is fairly similar in terms of gameplay. Much like SH:SM, the story has a couple decent moments, particularly the end, so I'd give it a plus for that, and I kind of like Calling's use of the wiimote's speaker function for the phone feature. There are more environments in Calling than just a school, but I much prefer the 16-bit aesthetic of Corpse Party to the bland, Shattered Memories style environments in Calling. While I did appreciate the kana practice, the average NA gamer won't be able to read a lot of the in game text at all. What I could read was all cheesy stuff like "scary", "danger", "I will return" etc., so it wasn't that great anyways, but it's a matter of principle. The game isn't scary, but the voice acting's kind of frightening, so maybe that counts. The writing isn't nearly as good as Corpse Party's, despite the story having a similar premise.
Ok, the game was an impulse buy when I saw it on sale for $10 new. I bought it expecting a bad Japanese horror game, and that's what I got, so I wasn't disappointed. I've played worse games, but don't expect Shakespeare. I guess it's a good reference point for why I like Corpse Party as much as I do, since I know where it could have gone. For the record, I suppose fans of SH:SM might be interested in Calling too, but I also think SM is the better game of the two.
