Welcome to the Splatoon thread.

Splatoon is the newest console IP from Nintendo, made by the members of Nintendo's SPD team.
The lead developer is the creator of Animal Crossing as is many of the team members.

What is Splatoon?

Splatoon is Nintendo's take on the Third Person Shooter genre in the form of a paintball shooter.
You play as inklings, squids who can take human form.
You must stop the enemies including octopuses from doing their evil deeds.

Is there a 1p mode? Yes, it is a story mode in the form a shooter/platformer used to unlock stuff

Is there an online mode? Yes, many you can play against 4v4 and other types of online battles. Though there is no voice chat, in order to protect players (see Swapnote incident for this).

Is there Amiibo function? Yes, Splatoon Amiibos will be sold in a single pack or 3-pack (Green Squid in the 3 pack only) at launch. The Amiibos provide for special missions that provide for exclusive gear.

Is there an offline mode? Yes, you can play local multiplayer.

The current news from the official stream!

Battle Dojo

- 1v1 offline multiplayer versus mode
- focus is on popping balloons
- uses the same arenas as multiplayer Turf Wars
- a column of colored rings indicates where a set of inflated targets will spawn
- player with the highest score at the end of five minutes wins
- point value doubles in the later moments of a match
- wooden crates contain surprise abilities
- these have to be used immediately
- not all of the special moves seen in multiplayer show up in this mode
- if you zoom out in front of your opponent, there is a mercy rule
- first player to score 30 points wins

amiibo

- in-game empty amiibo box sits in a corner of Inkopoli
- approaching the container and scanning the figures summons one of the three characters
- each one has a challenge
- certain missions reward you with gold, other hand out exclusive amiibo-only equipmen

Shopkeepers

- if you’re not connected to the Internet, you cannot buy anything to customize your character
- Nintendo will roll out gear over time that provides both a unique look and useful utility
- single player has its own sets of gear
- a separate form of currency called Power Eggs beefs up each one
- there isn’t a gear or equipment link between single-player and multiplayer

Customization

- no custom match types
- user settings for look sensitivity controls can only be adjusted before (or after) a match

I'll probably get it, though I might wait a short time to make sure that the online player population for it doesnt immediately start dying, because that's what happened for the last 3 or so games I took an interest in that had high focus on online play (which'd be the reason for me to get this one too). I really must stop being in the habit of just INSTANTLY buying things. Really was very frustrating. Local multiplayer aint happening for me, nope (it's not a super stereotypical FPS, so nobody I know will care... sigh). Not bothering with the amiibo.

...of course I *say* I'll probably wait a bit, but decent chance I just buy it right away out of impatience anyway.

already have the game, strategy guide and Amiibo 3-pack on preorder ( game at Gamestop, guide from Amazon and Amiibo from Wal-Mart's website ). Only game I'm more excited for this year is Xenoblade Chronicles X!

I'll probably just get the game at launch from my local Meijer's, though I do have rewards at Meijer's that will allow me to get the game at discount!

Though I need to drop down to Gamestop this week and preorder the Amiibo 3 pack.

The personality alone is enough to make me excited, I am getting it as soon as possible. Unfortunately I have seen nothing about 3 pack Amiibo in Australia.... oh wait EB games have them in now, I have to get my pre-order of just the girl Inkling over to the 3 pack. I don't usually do it in games, but I am planning on play as a female character, they just seem to have more personality.

And I managed to get the pre-order for the 3 pack done for me at EB games in Australia. I sympathise for you.

This game is getting people excited. For those who may not be aware, Splatoon fanart is actually pretty big, some of it a little..... dirty.

Then try another retailer.

Walmart's site is known for having problems.

I'm going to try Gamestop this Saturday, if not my local Meijer's should have it in stock (they don't do preorders on most stuff).

No need to now, Wal-Mart fixed itself or something earlier today as I got a confirmation email after trying again to get it through so I know for sure it's preordered now :)

For those of you who own a n3DS, Splatoon plates have been announced.

Quote:
Nintendo is hosting free demo events of Splatoon for all Wii U owners, and people who purchase the game will receive a squid-boatload of free post-launch content. Nintendo announced these and other details during a Nintendo Direct video focused on the Splatoon game, which launches May 29 exclusively for the Wii U console. To watch the Nintendo Direct in its entirety, visit http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct.

Splatoon represents Nintendo’s take on the action shooter genre. Characters called Inklings can transform into squids as they attempt to cover the play area with their team’s colorful ink and splat opponents. Today’s Nintendo Direct detailed many of the weapons, stages, gear, modes and other features available in the game. New announcements from the Nintendo Direct included:

Global Testfire: Wii U owners with a broadband Internet connection can now download from the Nintendo eShop a free special demo, which will enable them to participate in four-on-four Turf War battles in several one-hour demo events set at optimal times for global play. The first Testfire event is scheduled for 8-9 p.m. Pacific time on Friday, May 8, with additional opportunities on Saturday, May 9, at both 4-5 a.m. and 12-1 p.m. During the first one-hour demo event, Nintendo will be broadcasting a live stream hosted by game experts from Nintendo’s Treehouse as they play against other Testfire participants.

Four-on-Four Online Action: Players will have to think strategically when participating in Splatoon’s Turf War mode. Two stages are refreshed every four hours, meaning players will have to carefully consider weapons and tactics for the stages on hand. Different weapons work better in different stages, so players will discover depth in the weaponry as they focus their strategies on different two-stage pairings. After each four-on-four match, players are randomly reshuffled to form new teams, so sometimes players will be working with their friends and other times they’ll be looking to take them down.

Free Post-Launch Content: Five Turf War stages will be available at launch, but Nintendo will continue to add free new stages throughout summer 2015. Additionally, Nintendo plans to continually expand the game with new weapons, battle modes and gear. A major game update event in August will add two additional matchmaking options, including the ability for friends to form four-person teams and search for other four-person teams to battle against. The second option lets eight friends join up to battle in four-on-four matches on any stage and with any rules they want. The August update will also deliver a new battle mode and additional gear for characters to wear.

Gift with Purchase: Players who pre-order or purchase Splatoon at GameStop stores or GameStop.com will receive a digital download code upon their paid balance of the game for two Mii Fighter Splatoon-themed costumes available to download in summer 2015 for use in the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U game! This offer is available in the United States only while supplies last.

Splatfests: Themed events called Splatfests will pose questions to players such as: Do you prefer dogs or cats? Players must choose and represent their side during online battles. Players who rank high enough can even get a valuable Super Sea Snail item to upgrade gear. Prepare for the first Splatfest, taking place on June 20.

For more information about Splatoon, visit http://splatoon.nintendo.com.

Also the EU gets special promotion
In Europe, the digital version of Splatoon will be €39.99/£34.99. Downloading the demo gives you 10% discount until June 4

all 3 amiibo offer 20 challenges each, each with different rules
- complete all the challenges to unlock a new mini-game
- mini-games can be played while you wait to be matched with other players

That's right, this game is coming out rather soon; I keep forgetting the date and for whatever damn stupid reason thinking it comes out in October. No, I dont know why... can never remember dates, never could.

Wont be able to try the demo event though, not in a time slot I can get onto. Probably will pre-order though.

I know what you mean...my time, they'd be around midnight and 8 AM for the first 2. I might try for the midnight one, but at least I should be able to play in the final slot of the event since it's around 3 or 4 PM....
