They want their feelings for something to be justified. Sounds like they have the problem.

I don't understand how anyone could feel "pressured" to like shooters... they're the most maligned game genre... they're even blamed for violence in schools... I've noticed that it's quite popular to rag on shooters these days.

I, on the other hand, feel somewhat "pressured" to like RPG's... I don't really have anything against them, mind you, but they're not my cup of tea. I don't want to spend a lot of time tweaking my character or interacting socially with other characters (maybe it's an AS thing...)

I love shooters, but I've found that most of the ones I like are not "popular" (with a few exceptions like Half-Life and Call of Duty.) And I don't let other people's opinions dictate what I play.

I stated before that every gamer I know in my community loves shooters, and look down on me for not liking them. Even my brother hates the fact that I can't stand shooters. I know I shouldn't feel pressured to like what I don't care about, but I really needed a way to vent, so I posted this topic. The reason why I started a forum topic instead of blogging this is so that other gamers on here can let out some steam, and list games that they feel pressured by their peers to like and games that they feel are highly overrated. Also, I don't watch the news very much, so I don't know about any recent school violence that the media blames shooter games for (I am, however, well aware about video games being blamed for violence in school).

Yeah. I like some shooters and things like that sometimes.. But, the ones i always seem to get really into are more things like Zelda and Pokemon, usually on handheld systems. I like my PS3, don't get me wrong, but the ones i end up spendingt he most time on are almost always on handhelds for some reason. So, yeah, my gaming choices just seem very un-hardcore, even though i do play games a lot. The World Ends With You was one of my favorite games last year.

not pressure, but kinda related in a funny way

i was playing FO2, my all time fave :]
and a hyperactive friend/roomie came up to me and went "WOW FO2 Have you played diablo!?" "uh no... " "IF you like FO2 then youll LOVE diablo!! !"
"really?"

we swapped

15 minutes later we swap back :D

Me exhausted and near a heart attack, and him desperate as he had accidentally engaged combat with everyone in Arroyo, basically the good-guys home at the beginning of the game :]

Assuming you mean MMORPGs, I wouldn't mind socializing in them if it had anything to do with the game...I love role playing, but every MMO I've ever played, it seems people would rather talk about what anime they watched last night or whatever...bleh, I'll stick with IRC for that

Well, maybe I just find that hard to believe since shooters tend to receive so much negative criticism, and I'm not around many people who like them... but I wouldn't want to hang out with people who tried to make me conform to what they liked if I didn't like it, so I kind of understand where you're coming from. I just wish that people weren't out to destroy one of the few things that I still get enjoyment out of...

Then I guess it's a good thing that I never play MMO's, because people would probably look down on me for not liking Anime.

As an infant i used to put my face in the curtains, in the mistaken belief that if i couldnt see them, they wouldnt be able to see me. But i have since leaned that this approach is utterly futile, and just serves to me look stupid in a manner not befitting my age or experience.

So thats why i dont like curtain games anymore.

There seems to be a lot of pressure to not just like, but to nearly worship games made by Valve and Blizzard. Yeah, WarCraft II, StarCraft and WarCraft III were a lot of fun. Great strategy games, but not the best. I never did get into Diablo. I couldn't figure out how someone could have so much fun just repeatedly clicking on an enemy until it dies. I was looking forward to StarCraft II until they announced they were splitting it up into 3 different games and that playing on Battle.net would not be free. I won't be playing this game. I'm also not currently interested in Diablo III. Maybe by the time it comes out, some new game play elements will be introduced that will make me enjoy it.

Valve is another one. Half-Life and Half-Life 2 were pretty good shooters. Neither one really grabbed me like they did the masses. I'm not a fan of the story and find the games have really poor pacing. I don't play multiplayer games so games like Team Fortress II and the Left 4 Dead games never see time on my systems. I also thought Portal, while fun, was one of the most overrated games of all time.

YAY someone else who liked Total Annihilation

Has for me I don't have much of that trouble I like most game genre (just don't go toward most of them on my own)

But mostly a grand strategy, RPG, shooters, RTS player.

Well, just for example. I'm sure they talk about tons of other stuff, I just don't pay attention.

And then three minutes later, I quit and uninstall the game ;)

Fallout 3- It had an interesting story and good game play but I kept getting lost :s

GTA IV- It just dosen't live up to previous GTA games

Bioshock- I can't get into it for some reason

music games- I can only play them for a while and I'm bored

Halo Wars- I'm a Halo fanatic but I found it to be kind of boring. I haven't really found my RTS game yet.

Final Fantasy X- I love turn-based RPGS but FFX didn't hold my interest. I didn't even like the story.

I can't really say that there's a specific genre I hate. Sometimes it just takes a few trys to get into a game. I hated GOW the first time I played it, but a few months later I tried it again and loved it. The same goes for Mass Effect and Oblivion.

The problem with GTA IV (PC) is the lack of customisable keys. Some of these were later fixed with a patch, and more fixes with a patch. But for me and MANY MANY more is the damned 3rd person driving camera. Many people will use foot movement for driving. I am one of the few that has foot movement and driving movement totally different from one another. So this means I have to grow another hand to drive. I'm not bothered with vehicular handling, I can master that in a short space of time.

I'm hoping the latest patch has a control set for 3rd person driving. But I need to sort out my DVD drive first ...

I love first person shooters, I think they're fun. I loved Call of Duty (PC) when it was released, but Medal of Honor wasn't too great in comparison. But I will play it eventually

It is a tough game to get into at first, but it starts to open up as you go. Once you get past the demo portion, it starts to get a bit less linear, but I didn't really get into it until around the time where you find the camera (not really a spoiler, I hope).

Unfortunately it never did quite open up as much as I'd hoped it would...there were a lot of places where they had tables and things knocked over into strategic positions for battles...but there weren't any battles! And they give you plenty of opportunities to do some backtracking and revisit places you've already been, but they don't give you any REASON to, not like the first two games did. I wonder if it was just an issue of not having enough time to finish the game, or if they decided at the last minute to streamline it even more for the console kids =/

But I digress ;)
